Alright, I know that the best place to put a compresor is on an insert, but seeing as how I've yet to get an insert cable I need another way to hook it up to my mic. Can I run the XLR from the mic to the in of the compressor, and a 1/4" cable from the out of the compressor to the in of the mixer, turn on phantom power on the mixer and have that work to power to mic? Or for phantom power to work will I need to plug the mic directly into channel... if this is the case I'll just put the compressor on an effects loop.

Nov 30, 2003 03:40 pm you can have it running between the mixer and the soundcard...
Nov 30, 2003 03:41 pm If you use an effects loop, the aux will have to be set to pre and the fader will have to be down all the way or else you'll get the original signal mixed in with the compressed one which will defeat the purpose.
Putting the compressor before the preamp (mixer) won't work very well because the signal will be so weak.
You could just put it out the output of the mixer before the soundcard. That's how I work it with mine. I suppose it depends on if you mix a lot of stuff together using the mixer and only want one thing compressed, rather than everything at once. But it will work perfectly if you're just recording one thing (or two if you are only going mono) at a time. If your mixer has more busses, then even better.

Nov 30, 2003 04:58 pm alright so I would run my mic into channel 1 and then my main left and right outs into my soundcard, aux out to compressor, compressor to aux in? I don't want to put the compressor on the effects loop really because I record a few tracks at once and don't want them all to be compressed, so would putting it on the aux loop work better?

Nov 30, 2003 07:38 pm or could I run my mics into the channels on teh board, have the main outs go intot he compressor and then out into the soundcard and have the group outs go straight to the card, allowing me to compress only the signals i send to the main outs...?
Nov 30, 2003 08:23 pm Yep, that's what I was suggesting.

Dec 02, 2003 01:29 am Whatever you do, don't run phantom power through your compressor ;)
