Crate Blue Voodoo

I am looking at getting the Crate BV120HB head. Its 120 watts, tube, has reverb, two channels and its supposed to have an awsome sounding distortion. I have a Crate practice amp and its served me well. Crate amps are said to be built like tanks and from my own experience I would agree. I have not been able to decide what amp I wanted, and after lots of research it was either this or a Carvin halfstack. The Carvin was supposed to have horrible distortion, which is important to me. Anyone know about this Crate
amp?

ive owned this amp before. personally i would stay away from it if your budget can afford to. The blue voodoo head actually uses solid state circuitry instead of tube i think... They light up some tubes in the back of the amp to make it look like tube driven, but i heard it wasnt. One piece of evidence i have of this was my amp, 2 of the tubes were blown out and not even working, yet the distortion still sounded the same. Some much better amps with WAY better distortion are: Mesa Boogie Dual/Triple Rectifier series. Peavey 5150 II. Hughes & Kettner Duotone or Marshall JCM2000 TSL. But again those amps are more pricey.

I've never liked Crate's distortion. It always sounded grainy and harsh to me. Of course, opinions on amp sound quality are so subjective that it may be worth while to hear it yourself.

At least start at harmony central's user reviews www.harmony-central.com/G...BV120HB-01.html , which may or may not be any help to you in deciding.

From what I can gather, if you're into metal then Crate may be suited to you.

The last band in the studio here use Crates biggest heads and they definately had crunch. A bit much for my taste but lots of power, and very loud as well. The Blue Voodoo is more suited to what it sounds like BLUES. It is an allright amp but if your looking for raw power that is not the amp you want. The Mesa Stupe refered to is one of the best but as he said it is also one of the priciest. In that range I would opt for a Soldano.

carvin legacy blows any crate out of the water. Alot of people go for a half stack because they want a big amp... or whatever BS reason they give you... they want a big amp. dude. id honestly say you might be better off going with a nicer quality combo. but trust on this- crate sucks. you will get VOLUME, not TONE. there is a difference. i cant tell you what to get... but i can suggest NOT getting a crate.

I have sat in with a couple garage metal bands for yucks and the guitars had crate double stacks and I thought the sounds was quite good for metal, I didn't care for their clean tone too much, but I thought the dirty sound was very rich and crunchy. I have always liked Crate myself for budget amps. Sure there are better amps out there, but for the money, sound and features I personally feel Crate is a pretty decent deal.

I gotta agree with dB, the Crate your looking at is great for metal. Take a look around at some of the biggest bands out there who rely on that heavy low end crunch and overdriven distortion sound. They are using Crate, as well as others. But If Crate sucks so badly as stated above, why would top touring heavy *** bands use them? Because they can! Like I said above, the last band that was here used them and I thought the tone was excellant for what those guys were doing. Balls to the wall crunch. I might add that I have also mixxed for them live as well, and found them pretty easy to mic up and get good tone without much worry.

So again, if yoru into that type of heavy sound, the Crate will work just fine.
