Drum Loops

Not sure how to ask this but giving it a shot. I have a Roland XV-5080 and using Pro Tools as my sequencer. I have tried but cannot get any of my drum sounds to produce a loop that sounds anything like you hear on today on a lot of pop songs. Ex. Michelle Branch Songs.
Do most producers using loops with Acoustic/Rock create their own loops or use loop CD's? If so, how do they make them? (Equipment wise and stuff)Thanks in advance.

Well I dont think there are any loops on Michelle Branch tunes, I could be wrong. But I think most of her stuff has a live drommer on it. With the XV-5080 you should have some pretty good drum sounds to work with. How exactly are you programming your loops, step writing them or playing them in with a controller? How you write your loops makes a big differance. Are they straight ahead with no velocity changes, does the tempo drift off the mark a bit here and there. These are all keys to getting agood feeling loop going. I know I can spend a lot of time getting drum parts to sound, not programmed it is not easy work at all.

Give me a clue as to how your programing your drums and Ill see if I can help ya out. Or someone else will chime in as well.

Ain't that the truth, man you can spend hours trying to do what a real drummer can do in minutes :)

The closest I've come was on "Are You gonna Be around" and I spent probably as much time on them as I did the rest of the song. It did fool a few people though.

I think one of the key things to focus on is making enough different fills, kick beats, variation on the snare that it's at least not obvious it's being done by programming, as well as slight volume changes on the beats.

Even when you get a pretty good track going, for me it's even harder to make them sound right in the mix. they sound great by themselves, and not so great once things started getting added.

for the ep im doing, im limiting myself to real basic drum loops only...just kinda groovy rhythms rather than proper drum tracks. next time, im gonna get real heavy with the programming...take it a step further.

theres some wicked loops here by the way, although theyre perhaps a bit dubious when it comes to copyright...so use them for inspriation only....

Noize2U,
Thanks for the input. If you can get your hands on track 3 or 4 or Michelle Branch's new CD "Hotel Paper", you could hear exactly what I'm talking about. The verse's are loops but then at the chorus like you said there is a live drummer. My intention is or at least i think it is to create a loop that sounds like one of her loops, not to sound like a real drummer. Am i making sense? Thanks for your help.

you can listen to a little of each song but track#4 is the one im referring to and you can only hear about a measure of the loop then it goes right to the chorus.
