dB, I read through your computer tuning article, and I was trying to disable some of the services that I determined I didn't need on my new computer. But the only options I could find was to stop or start services. So I stopped a couple of them, restarted the computer, and they were running again. Is there a special trick you need to do to actually disable them.

thanks

There's a manual user function called "pound with sledgehammer" that I have found to be particularly effective. :) You can also try removing running items from your task manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del. There's a (real) program called Ad-Aware available on download.com that can remove ad-ware and spyware. Other programs can remove items from your startup sequence but I don't know any of the names of those programs at this time.

Ya, in the services there is an option to disable as well...right in the same place you stop them.

If ad-ware or Search & destroy will not remove spyware you can download "Hijack This" from here. www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ It will list all registry and startup areas that spyware and that **** hides. If you dont know what to remove from the list then there is a good forum I found devoted to that. boards.cexx.org/viewforum.php?f=1
You just post the logfile that Hijack this gives you and someone will help.

spywareinfo.com is the best site out there for this kind of thing.

Thanks guys. This computer is not going on the internet, so I shouldn't need to worry about spyware, but there are some stupid programs I can't seem to get rid of, that I want off the computer. Namely, MSN Messenger and Microsoft Outlook. Grrr. Plus I'd like to trim the fat as far as the services go.

Why remove them, messenger you can just set to not start with windows in the app preferences and Outlook is only part of the Office Suite (unless you are talking about OutLook Express) so just don't put it in in the first place, if you mean Express, it's so small who cares...

Yeah, I got messenger not to open upon start up, but I'd rather just have it not there. I'll take any free space I can get. It might be Outlook Express, I'm not sure. Is it unadvisable to just go into the Programs folder and just delete folders containing programs that I don't want. Or is it bad if I don't use the uninstall process.

And, I can't get rid of the stupid Shared files. It won't delete.

Dude, relax, you are worrying about things that are a total waste of time, and will gain you nothing, seriously. NO, don't just delete folders, uninstall. I don't recommend uninstalling Outlook Express. Messenger should be no problem though...

IE and Outlook Express are pretty serious parts of Windows, the lawsuit said they have to make it able to be removed, that isn't to say it has to be easy and painless to do...

Don't sweat the small stuff, removing those will gain you a whopping 6 MB...and gain you really NOTHING in performance.
