Hey peeps

Here's a "pre-vocal" mix of one of our new tracks that I have been working on past week or so. Everything recorded here at home (apart from the drums, recorded in my mate's front living room whilst his folks were at work that day).

Let me know

Very. Cool. Very. I would buy this. Refreshing, complex, well thought-out. I can't wait to hear it with vocals!

This sounds pretty cool. Everything is well done, as usual. Like Tincanbug said, can't wait to hear it with vocals.

I'm none too keen on my drum sound, it's just not sitting right in my mind - I think I need yet another assault on it.

Yes! Just what I asked for before :)
I like it-- Can't wait to hear the melody and everything. I like the drum sound for the most part, but the snare sounds a little distant and needs a bit more crack. It sounds like you were going for a different sound there than you usually do. The toms and cymbals sound great to me, though. Can't hear the bass drum well enough on these little computer speakers though (I'm not in my "studio"). Sounds great, though. Guitars are awesome. Love that fast rhythm stuff. The keys and stuff fit in very nicely :)

thanks prop :) I thought the snare was throwing the kit sound and I was gonna play with it in the next drum mix - it's too "flat" isn't, makes the drums sound "under produced" Need to sort that, get more air back into the snare.

Anymore "make this sound better" comments, please do because you're right...

The snare sounds much better to me when the instrumentation dies down in some parts of the song, but it doesn't cut through in the heavier parts. Needs more air like you said. Sounds like there's a mid frequency in there that's standing out and muffling the sound. Maybe its level could come up a bit, too. Sounds like the hi-hat needs a bit more hi-end. That's all I can really pinpoint, though. Just do your thing :)

Alright honestly, I didn't mention it at first, but I think the cymbals sound out of place, but I couldn't figure out what it was. After a second listen, I think what might be up with the cymbals is they might be better off eqed to a higher frequency. I agree with Porp on the snare comment after listening again. The snare sounds a bit soft (not quiet) and diffused. I do like the track overall though.

jues,

I really like the tune. As usual, you guys have put together a thoughtful arrangement and a nice mixture of heavy and not-so-heavy sounds and they all compliment each other very well.

Production-wise, it seems the whole mix is a little bassy. That might just be the MP3 though. Maybe it's just the distorted guitar and the bass fighting a little. It seems like there's some definition in the electric guitar that's being lost.

I thought that the kick was much less "punchy" than normal for you. I did only listen on my cans, but they usually give a pretty decent response. The snare feels maybe a little too "distant" but that's merely a matter of taste. I feel the same way as Porp about the "crack" as well.

I love the clean electric tone.

The big toms towards the end also seem to resonate a little too much and mud up with the bass and guitar. Again, maybe just the MP3 getting bassed out or something.

Take it for what it's worth, but that's my 2 cents. You asked for it! I can't wait to hear it with the vocals and once you get the mix more dialed in. Don't hate me! Keep it coming man, keep it coming.

I don't hate any of you - I need feedback on my work :D

I'm gonna scrap most of that drum mix and start again, I had the drummer breathing down my neck the whole time whilst doing it anyway :D

Thanks for all your comments blue, porp Et coolo, appreciated.

Here is the latest mix with all the things above taken into acount.

I think the toms need some reverb added, and the guitar tone / level needs a bit of TLC. But this is for the next session.

Any new comments, please shoot.

Thanks
jues.

Bring the tom's up in the mix, particularly during the break at 1:50'ish. I think more than just a hi Tom would have been good there or maybe I just can't the lower toms. The rest of the drum mix sounds pretty good. Definitley an improvement over the first mix.

that put a smile on my face - top!

like the shimmery spooky noises, the spacy drums, the snare sounds cool, the chord sequence, the drop (especially the guitar sound on that bit...) its very flipcycle, but with some cool new sounds and techniques.

loving it man!

Well jues, you have done it once again. For rough tracks it doesnt sound to bad at all. Just got a chance to listen today, and listened to the first one, had a beef with what sounded like a china splash kind off being muddled by the guitar sound, but it was gone in the second mix. I think I hear what you mean about the toms, not real far off but maybe still needing to be brightoned up a bit with some verb.

As far a guitar tones go, I like most of what is there. You guys have a pretty distinct tone going in your mixes. There is a pass, maybe two that the guitar tone messes with what sound like an wide open high hat. The TLC you wpeak of on the guitar tone/levels might fix that up nicely. I will give a better listen to the second take tommorrow and let ya know exactly where I hear it if ya need it.

Things are mixing much better now, Jues. The snare still sounds like it could use a little more high end, but perhaps that is just these terrible speakers I'm listening on right now. I'll have to listen to it in my car or on my monitors when I get the chance. Good job, man!
