Low-Gain with sustain?

The only way I've ever been able to get that "wet" -sounding chunka chunka eighth notes or galloping triplets , muting with palm, is with high-distortion settings. But now that I've got me a preamp and compressor I want to cut as much distortion as I can and still get that sustain but with clearer punchier attack. I think compressors are supposed to be good for that. The tone I'm shooting for, is a cross between Angus Young and the guys from Meshuggah. Seems contradictory but atleast in my head and to my ears, that sound is there. But my experimentation with compression settings is going poorly.

I originally got the preamp (VTB-1) & compressor (RNC) for vocals, and now am trying these with my Marshall and SM-57 just to see what other flavors I can make. I figure the preamp is transparent enough (I keep the "tube blend" at zero) but I want to compress just a tad 2:1 or so, to tighten things up on the way to my PC recording setup. (would that be a legit tactic?)

But for making sustain with low distortion levels, are we talking about more squashing or more artful use of attack and release? I'm seriously obsessed with this right now.....anyone else have this fever? any obvious thing I'm missing here?

thanks alot

i have this fever right now with my carl martin compressor. long attack and release settings will get you some tasty sustain. seriously just play with it and you'll eventually get exactly what you're looking for.

insta sustain!

ratio to 8:1 or higher!
attack to 50ms (fairly quick) - dependant on tempo
release all the way up baby.

now throw down that threshold

How could you NOT have that fever?

OK I'm really twitching now- feeling a little shaky

BUT first I need to clear this up for myself. Right quick;

These terms mix me up. Everyone uses them differently (I'm a little embarrased)

MINKUS:
1) When you say " Long " Attack, do you mean a high number of Milliseconds for the attack.? This is the same as saying a "slow" attack right?
2)Also "long" release, you mean higher number of milliseconds too? A "slower" release?

JUES:
1)when you say "throw down" that Threshold. You mean have the threshold set at a larger negative number on the dial ? Like -15 instead of -5 for example?
2) My RNC has the attack ranging from 0.2 to 200 MS. You mean 50 ms, as fairly quick, right?
3)Release "all the way up". This means the max number of milliseconds right?

Oy ! Here I was planning to ditch the compressor on the way IN to my PC based on some other things I heard, now you guys tell me this ! I have to fully explore this. I'm sure eventually I'll do different things for different songs
Thank you very much guys I am giddy. Please try to get back to me on those terms if you can

thanks

i was saying long attack and release because my pedal's settings for both are on one knob, sadly. i totally forgot this when i was posting. listen to jues. yes, longer is slower is higher numbers.

as for the threshold, you've really got to experiment to find a good spot for it. don't be afraid to go deep, but keep your ears open.

if it works, you might want to have the compressor between your guitar and your amp so that you can actually hear what changes you're making.
