Aug 01, 2003 02:48 pm i was absorbed when i saw solaris in the theatre. i love movies for which the look and feel is as important as the story or characters. this film had great music and a beautiful planet. and its got jeremy davies. but...
i rented it the other night, to refresh my memory, and couldn't finish it. it's very slow--it's supposed to be--but this time i found it grindingly so. essentially this flick is a love story and a psychological journey...the sci fi is the means to that. george clooney is an annoying man who threatens, in general, to smother everything with his hideous charm-weaponry. it's starkly, emotionally barren, somehow, even as it manages to be a love story, it stands so far removed. i don't have a final verdict. just that i find something wrong with this picture, which i can't place, but that it's got some nice things too. i'd say it's worth it. just don't expect a sci-fi film.
