I record with Cakewalk but I was just wondering..is there a big difference between a Workstation and recording with a Sequencing program on a Computer? When compared..which comes out on top? Or does it depend on whatever the person is looking for?

Well, ya really can't say any is "better" than the other, as I have heard good recording come from workstations, PC's, and 4-track tape decks for that matter. It depends on what the engineer is used to, what other equip is available and any number of other factors. I personally use a computer because I am very comfortable on a computer. Tape decks frustrate me and workstations (reasonably priced ones) I find not very user friendly, but thats me, others are different.

Yeah, I figured it was probably up to the indiviual. The way you hear some people talk, you'd think that their set up is the best. Well.. I guess to them it is. If a person is comfortable with a particular set up and they have received good results..then it's good for them. I would rather use a computer also..plus it seem's that workstations tend to get pricy. I guess, 'to each their own' would apply here. Thanks

To me a workstation is either limiting or simply an interface. Workstations which incorporate editing and an massaging (I don't know what he meant to type... Messaging mabye? Or does he just have a unit that actually massages while he mixes... -Loki) functions that replace the software used in a PC or Mac for the same purpose are very limited. Workstations that incorporate hardware processing again are limited in comparison to the huge selection of stand alone outboard hardware processors. Workstations that provide interface to PC or Mac software are a luxury for me that I am unwilling to purchase. I also agree with Db in that the interfaces that I have played with are not a direct match to the software in visual terms and are combersome to me. I prefer the mouse and keyboard. I have a Tascam 488 and the interface feature is wasted on me. The eight faders on the panel have to be switched to a second "bank" to work with software faders 9-16. There many multi function knobs that also have to be switched back and forth to work multiple knobs on the software. Many functions are just not covered so it is back to the mouse. For file naming etc. it is a keyboard. Pretty much just added clutter for my prefered working invironment. I have read about interface panels that are much more inclusive and much more expensive. The cost benifit factor is just not there as they could only make things easier, not better.
