Well, here is my story. I am resonably financially secure but dB Masters is not my only gig. It is my home/side business. My full time job is website and multimedia production for a software manufacturer. (www.retek.com if you care)
I have no music education other than the school of hard knocks for the last, oh, 20 years. And I am the only "dB guy" it is a one-man show.
As for what I do, well I am half engineer, half producer. as an engineer I give the customer what they want, as a prducer I suggest mixing and such, commonly things like "the kick drum is a little loud there" and "the vocals need some punch" type of stuff.
In my experience you can't really be an effective producer without knowing the engineering piece as well.
As far as being a good career to pursue, ya, it's always great to do something you enjoy for a living. Though dB Masters is not my main source of income I am lucky insofar as I get to do the same type of work in my full-time job as well. It's a lot easier to get up in the morning when you like going to work.
Does that help explain anything?
