Recording midi date problems - Please help

Hi guys - please help me on this one
I have a pc running XP pro & an Audigy s/c. I am trying to record a guitar through a Boss GT-6 connected by 2 midi cables (in to out & out to in) using Cakewalk Home Studio 2.
I have set the ports of the s/c for midi inputs and outputs and I can change the patches in the Home Studio, which in turn changes the GT-6 patches - so i know the midi data seems to be going in one direction.
The problem is when I try to record on a midi track - I am not getting any data into the PC.
Any help would really be appreciated, cos this is driving me nuts.
