Yep, what a front man he was. He would have made any band great, but Brain May's guitar work was good too, though superb guitar playing alone never guarantees success.

argh...I never liked Queen, Brian May rocks, anything he touched outside of Queen was great, but I really thought (or, still think) Queen's music was, and still is, way over-rated.

I agree it is overrated but that happens when someone dies, because you can't speak bad of someone who's dead, but still they were great in my opinion

Ya, when someone dies they suddenly become bigger than life and everything they ever did was stellar, that's true. But they were way over-rated long before Mercury died. May is a great guitar player, Mercury was a good front man...their music just never spoke to me...

I agree their music was over-rated. But they had the best showman out front is all I was saying. At least they knew how to have a good time.

i find bands like Coldplay and Radiohead depressing in comparison. What is it with all this maudlin stuff nowadays anyway? Music to get depressed to? Still, there is hope, Whitesripes know how to have some FUN!

(Sorry, needed to get that off my chest)

I agree with ya glynb, my music is sometimes depressing, sometimes not depending on the mood when I write (like most folks) but it seems much of the radio these days is very depressing stuff...

For about 10 years I worked as security/body guard for Christian rock bands that came to the Twin Cities, with their more upbeat and positive messages I found a lot of inspiration and some of them really rock. Stavesacre and Tourniquet are still a couple of my fav Christian Metal bands. But they will never get mainstream attention unless they develop drug problems or beat up their girl friends...I am not really into the whole "Christian Music" scene that much, cuz many of the fans drive me nuts, and some of the bands are very phoney, but not most of them.

The thing that drove me nuts about the fans is when they have to get back stage cuz God is leading them to do this or meet this person...even as security, how do you argue with a kid that honestly believes his God is telling him this or that...argh...makes me look like satan. And actually, that happened VERY frequently. But at least when there is trouble, by and large I was dealing with sober people, which makes everything a little bit easier.

** whew ** sorry, I had to vent there too I guess...

i can't fuggin stand queen, never could, never will.

bland rock with an ok guitarist and an o.k. frontman. give me that much cocaine and i'll be the best damn showman in the whole darn world!!! just like our freddie.

yeah, they broke barriers, but only ones that zep, sabbath and purple broke before, with more balls.

there was one video where they were on a train and all going for it on drums bass and guitar, even though the song's blatantly all synth.

a bit like the video where stevie wonder was driving a cadillac down sunset strip.

most people perceive deep as depressing, so thats why there's so much dirge about.

also, i heard an interview with chris martin of coldplay, where he said he's always wanted to chuck a tv out the window of a hotel, but they're all plasmas attached to the wall or about 2 tonnes!

some people have no commitment!

"bland rock with an ok guitarist and an o.k. frontman. give me that much cocaine and i'll be the best damn showman in the whole darn world!!! just like our freddie."

Er, no.
With a load of coke up yer nose you would only THINK you were the best showman in the world and you would make damn sure everyone else around knew you thought that!

I don't know if a person can work hard and 'become' that kind of showman, or whether it has to be in you in the first place and then you can develop it with pratice. I guess the latter.

Some people are just born show-offs, others are born show offs who look really cool, and other lucky people are born show-offs who look cool and have talent as well! These last ones are rare. Springsteen is an example.

Would anyone have ever heard of The Doors if Jim Morrison had looked like Forrest Gump? Thats the power of a great frontman, makes all the difference.
I rest my case.

well glyn, all that could well be true, but queen were still an average rock band with an ok frontman who did do a lot of coke (amongst other things). fair enough, he could do the job, but so can a lot of others.

no-one was interested in the doors before jim morrison, but at least he had the good grace to die before he disappeared up his own tailpipe. also, i believe you are taking away from the lyrical stance and often drug fuelled antics that was as much to do with his fame as his looks.

and springsteen? well, he did his bit, and now he's middle of the road at best. although i do have to admit that to write lyrics that are supposed to be deep while sounding and coming across as that shallow is no mean feat!

btw, i am NOT advocating drug use as a necessary part of the creative process.

Well, all this really falls under the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" category.

And as far a Springsteen goes...I have never understood how he got out of the local club scene...I never will understand that, he just ain't that great.

But again, it's the eye of the beholder...I like a lot of people that others would bash on. I never liked Queen, but a lot of folks did...whaddya gonna do...

true enough.

i look at some of the new bands that are getting signed etc and i think that maybe the mainstream had nothing in it when brucie and freddie were gigging, cos that's why some of the new bands are signed now.

Well its very true that personal choice is always the decider when it comes to music, you can't persuade someone that some artist is 'great', you can only encourage them to listen and let them make their own minds up.

Thing to do when someone says an artist you particularly admire is crap is to ask them what they like and from that you can tell where they are coming from an whether to take them seriously or not. So for example my friend came with me to a Springsteen concert and didn't like it all all. Week before he'd been to one by Whitesnake and thought it was superb. This tewlls me what kind of musical mentality he has, now i know why he doesn't get Springsteen and i can tell from that that Dylan's stuff would also be wasted on him.

Its not a case of me being right and him being wrong, we are just worlds apart musicaly.

Its like someone liking a bland picture of scenery (chocolate box picture) and thinking that is great art whilst dismissing Picasso as rubbish, you start to understand where their mind is at in relation to art.

I find a lot of home recording enthusiasts are more into kick-*** musicianship and than what an artist may have 'something to say'. That's their choice and nothing wrong with that.

BTW I'm not keen on Queen's music either, just made the point they had a great frontman, and contrary to what has been suggested they are rare, not common - just look around your local bar scene and you'll see that a frontman who has 'it all' is not easy to find.

Hmm, I only opened this thread because I happened to be listening to Queen as I was reading through the forum. I don't have the biggest knowledge of Queen, or rock of that era (or rock in general). But I do know this, the guitar solo at the end of We Will Rock You, sends me into my own private 5th dimension everytime I hear it. It is just one of those things that musically moves me, like a musical high. The beginning of Santanna's Samba Pa Ti does it too.

That's great Coolo. Listen to music on its own merits, you don't have to know about genres and whether an artist is cool/hip or not, just use your ears, listen and enjoy what moves you.

Great thing about maturing is that you can listen to music from all kinds of sources and enjoy it for its own sake. I can listen to Country, rock ,classical, opera, easy listening and enjoy it all (if it is good music of its type). I feel sorry for people who ONLY like heavy metal, or only like Country, whatever, they ,miss out on so much.
