Hey guys-- Quick question:
How should I go about micing a stereo amp? The amp is a Line 6 210 Spider. Should I just focus my attention on one of the speakers? Are both speakers putting out the same thing?

if it's a stereo amp, put one mic on each speaker. then pan the mics in opposite directions and record like that. that will show you for sure whether or not the speakers are putting out different signals.

If it's a Line 6, it probably has a bunch of effects, right? Some of those effects, like any sort of chorus, are probably stereo. But if you're just using dry sounds then one mic is probably enough. As always, go with what sounds good! It might actually kinda be cool to mic two different speakers, as long as the mics are in phase.

Yup,

Gotta go with St Dave. When you are listening to the amp as played with a group, what is the quality that you want to capture? Do you hear a stereo seperation that you want to retain in the finished piece? If so use two mics, one on each speaker. If the amp is putting out an effect that blends and reaches the listener's ear without seperation then try one mic.

Bottom line is experimentation. Try different mic sets untill you capture the sound that your "minds ear" wants to hear.
