i am building a studio from scratch. problem is i dont know exactly everything i need to complete it. i want to go computer based. somewhere along the lines of sonar, but what kind of interface do i need? and about about pre amps and mics and all that sh*t. i have the money. i have the musical knowledge, and i can read. so if there is any advise anyone would like to throw at me im all ears (or eyes because this is the internet). i am not really a digital person. i like warm vintage sound, but i can deal with computers. i want something easy to use. not hard to get lost in. ya know? PLEASE HELP!!

theres a whole section in the recording tips part of this site that deals with building a studio. computer based is always easy in my expierience. cause computers have most of the things you need to work with in them, you just need the equipment to interface with them, i think that section is covered in this site.

I went with SONAR 2.0 XL and I like it because it has basically everything I need, effect wise and many plugins including a tuner. As a sound card I use an Aardvark q10 and find it very east to use. . . I do have to do some tweaking in XP professional because there is a conflict with the DHCP client (doesn't like networking and running sound at the same time)

Like zek said, your PC needs two basic components, the first is the software:

Sonar 2: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Sonar 2 XL: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

secondly is the sound card, as studio use generally needs more from a sound card than most computer users ask, you really should get a ver good sound card, and there are great recommendation and link all over these forums. as far as preamping, etc, you can run all your mics and such into a mixer, just like if you were mixing analog, and then run the mixer into the sound card, using the mixers preamps, or any other preamp you wish, the main point is, the sound card is the end of the analog line, from there it goes into the PC and gets recorded digitally.

And if it is the warmth of analog that you are woried about not haveing by going PC based for recording, fear not. There are ton's of pluggin's that will do the job. Or you can do like I do and use both world's together. I still have rack's of analog stuff, but do most of the tweaking in the PC. (Sonar 2.0 XL and WaveLab and SoundForge)

I not only use it to record multitrack, but I do sound design, and score film, right on the PC. so your option's are many, and the program's I mentioned above are really only the main 3 I use. dB will testify I have more software crammed on this machine then should be possible. But if you are going to get answer's when you come here, I better be able to pull up the software and look for what you might need to know. So there is a means' to my madness.

Anyway, the PC is really the greatest thing to happen to audio since, the invention of tape.
