ok.. i recently picked up a neutrik patchbay and am having a tough time getting it all set up.

what i want it to do is:
i have a zoom efx unit and a line 6 efx unit that i want to be able to patch to, depending on which one i want to use.

how do i get the patchbay hooked up to my mixer?
i have an aux send and a left and right aux return.. i also have an efx send and a left and right efx return. and i have a left and right effects processor direct in section..

so many ins and outs.. what goes where.. im drowning in cables hehehe

im off to work.. but ill be back in a few hours to see if i need to provide more info.

my mixer btw is a behringer mx 1804x

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me get this straightend out.

Right - how much do you know about patchbays, is there an artile here on HRC on them?

The basic thing to remember is that the OUPUTS from Devices goes on the top row and the INPUTS of Devices goes along the bottom row.

Also remember that there are two main types of patch setting - open and normalled) - open means that the top jack has no connection to the jack underneath it, where setting a "channel" as normalled will result in there being a permanant link from the top jack to the bottom - unless you break it via patch cables.

So. If you start off by running all your insert points into it - this will make using inserts much easier. Using Insert cables (Those TRS ones that go from One "stereo" jack into two mono jacks.) link from the break-point in the channel to the top and bottom jacks on the patchbay - then set that channel (on the patch-bay) as normalled - this way there will be a constant link from the send to the recieve - unless you patch something in - (like a compressor, etc).

You could then either use another patchbay (or the spare channels on the first) to hook up all the 1/4 jack inputs of your mixing desk - (these would go on the bottom row of the patchbay) - then you could put syntns / sound generators above the desired channels and they would be normalled togher (unless you re-patched it)

Finally - yes, you can hook your AUX send and returns onto the patch bay (with send on the top row and the returns on the bottom - but DO NOT set these as normalled - otherwise you could possibly create a feedback loop!) Then your FX units (reverbs, etc) can be brought up on seperate "channels" on the patchbay - again, just ensure you set these to open - or you run the risk of creating a feedback loop.

hope that helped (sorry, it's late over here)
jues.

at one point in time this made sense.. but im back to being retarded again. too many wires =P

ok.. the line 6 unit. has left and right inputs and outputs.. for stereo connections in to and out of the unit.

i run the "ins" of the line6 to the lower row on the back of the patchbay.
then i run the "outs" of the line6 to the upper row on the back of the patchbay.

then to connect the mixer.. i run a cable from the aux send of the mixer to the bottom row on the back of the patchbay.
followed by connecting the aux return of the mixer to the upper row on the back of the patchbay.

something is not hooked up right at all. cause im getting sound but im not getting anything out of the effects unit. and no. before today, i had never touched a patchbay. so the very concept of one is entirely foreign to me.

collapse, if yo go to Behringers site at this link, www.behringer.com/02_prod...00&lang=eng you will be able to download their manual for the UltraPatch Pro. It has a perfect drawing and setup drawings for what you can and cant do with a patch bay.

but lets play a fun game.. a giant game of connect the dots.

just draw the lines where necessary. please. =)

im wanting to connect the two fx units to the patch bay and to be able to patch them together or separately [as needed].

i promise.. when this is done.. and i understand how it works.. im writing an article on this; there is no reason for it to be this complex.

Okay, here's how I would set it up - set everything to "normalled" and that way, when you give a channel some "Aux / FX" (use one for left and right (for stereo processing) it will first go to the line 6's filter and then to the Zoom FX unit. the signal will then return to the mixer via the AUX returns, requiring no patch calbes.

jues.
