How to convert my phone's headphone output to Line In?

I recently received an older stereo system, and I'd like to plug my phone's headphone jack into the rca phono plugs on the back of the stereo. I'm using the plugs marked for the phono input. I have done this, hoping to hear it sound as nice as the tuner did playing fm, but my sound is distorted and muddled sounding. I turned down the phone volume all the way and heard it sound distorted at all volumes.

Would I need to purchase some sort of direct input box due to an impedance problem? I see a lot of line converters for car radios, not much for the home stereo. Can anyone recommend a product that would help me? Thanking you in advance for replies...

Ok, nevermind... I happened to try a different input (cd) and it's working flawlessly. Don't know why it didn't occur to me to check the other input, but I'm all set apparently... :)

For the record, what you ran into was the phono preamp -- Not unlike a mic preamp -- Amplifying the very weak signal from a moving coil cartridge to line level (hence the distortion when it encountered a signal already at line level) and applying a rather radical EQ curve (the RIAA curve -- sort of the equivalent of pre-emphasis / de-emphasis on CD recordings) to the signal (hence the complete lack of top end and boominess in the lows).
