up until this very moment, i've been a long-time fan of winamp...but honestly that's just because that's what i loved for my windows 98 computer...and i've just stuck with it....windows media player does do the same for me (play mp3's mostly on this laptop) but i'm wondering if it's completely unnecessary to install 3rd party software when the stock player does what i need....i will say until now, i've ALWAYS NEVER used eq/bass-boost/stereoize/LOUD effects because i wanted "purity"....from crap speakers in less than ideal situations....but now i step back...and am kinda-sorta confident i could use these to my advantage IF i do them on purpose...i'm not unsatisfied with current performance...but i wanna tweak some settings yo! and that's what got me thinking about using EQ and whatnot to my advantage....anyway back to the point....whatcha'll use for playin' mp3's or .wav's as a general player?

Feb 17, 2013 08:06 am Well, once I got passed the wacky grammer that isn't unpresent in that post, I tend to agree with you on almost every point you made. I have been w Winamp fan and used it foer a long time, but, WMP seems to be just fine.
In fairness however, the last few years, I hardly ever play mp3's on my PC so I really don't use anything anymore, but, I have a media monkey installed to manage the kids music and a drive full of music that I have which I no longer listen to. Media Monkey is pretty damn cool.

Feb 17, 2013 05:02 pm Winamp is good if you don't mind that it has become a little bloated.
But I've moved away from it. I use XMPlay, and sometimes VideoLan (VLC Player) for my media playback needs.
XMPlay is just a bare bones audio playback with EQ, reverb, auto-amp, ramping, interpolation/smoothing, surround sound, and visualizations. There are a lot of nice skins for it as well, including a winamp-ish skin.
They also make the claim of having "balls on accuracy" but how true that is, no idea. :P
here's the skinny on it:

It's also tiny. It's like a 335KB download.

Feb 21, 2013 11:21 pm Mine was black, and I think the edges were slightly rounded. It was during highschool, so....1994-ish? I think the buttons were silver colored though.
Feb 22, 2013 09:56 am Mine wasn't even close to a sony...I had knock offs of everything, but they worked, so in hind sight, what the hell...
