Ability to use built in instruments in keyboard as midi ?

I realize this is probably a very simple and naive question but that's why I'm here. I use my Yamaha keyboard now as a Midi Controller for Native Instrument Synths but the stock midi instruments in my recording program simply suck. Not very realistic sounding. The Strings and similar Orchestra Instruments in my keyboards sound very good. I am very new to the whole Midi thing but have been recording with a Tascam digital board for a long time so Midi can be confusing at times but is it possible to use the actual instruments in my Yamaha as Midi Instruments ? It does have send & receive Midi. ( clarification - the actual exact instrument sounds and quality that I hear acoustically ) I can just record it as a line in but here again I am exploring Midi and it's advantages. I'm just looking for a simple yes or no answer and I will take it from there. I don't want to waste time researching something that is not possible so I appreciate your knowledge on the subject.

Thanks
P.S. the new software I will be getting soon has the ability to convert recordings to midi so if not that may be the way to go.

Okay, first, to clear any misconception, midi contains no audio information. It is purely performance control data.

Now, to answer your question (and to clarify for myself) are you meaning to record the sounds from your yamaha? If so, that is entirely doable.

If you have midi data sending from the computer to the keyboard, all you need to do is connect the audio outs from your keyboard into the line-in on your soudcard/audio interface or mixer, and record the audio to a separate audio track in the DAW. If you run the keyboard through an amp/cabinet, then you mic the speaker, and record the audio to an audio track.

So, the information flow should be something like:

Computer/DAW with the midi track --> send to keyboard --> keyboard interprets the data and performs using its onboard sound --> keyboard sends audio out to the line-in on the interface/mixer and back into the computer --> DAW will record the audio to an audio track. This will record your keyboard's onboard instruments/sounds based on the midi data that is sent from the PC.

Is this what you are looking to do? The note about recording from the line-in kinda threw me off.

Also, welcome to the forum. :)

I'm not sure if you have answered my question in your second paragraph. I've been recording the normal audio way from my keyboard for a long time. This is strictly Midi related question. I think you touched on what I'm looking for as far as info. I record now on my digital board and Sony acid straight up audio but my question is the instruments in my keys sound very good and since it has a Midi send and receive can the actual quality sounds that are in my keyboard produce the same exact sounds in some kind of midi loop to and from the computer. I am just very pleased with the string sounds it produces and want to use it in midi form. The midi instruments in acid really blow. I am aware you can buy vst's. I also know the new software I'm going to buy Sonar Producer X1 has the ability to convert audio to midi. I want to work with midi more and learn how to use it more than I currently am because of the benefits.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome.

Hope this clarifies better.
