Behringer Xenyx X2442USB - Audio out problem

Well, I'm brand new to this so I don't know if this is something I am doing or a problem with the mixer. The audio out to the headphones is perfect, the audio out to the PA Speakers is very faint. Have to put the main mix all the way up, the channel slide all the way up and the volume on the PA Speakers themselves all the way up to hear anything and of course then it is distorted but still faint. The main outs for the mixer go to a pair of Mackie SRM 350's. If I connect a mic or guitar directly to one of the SRM 350s, it works fine so I don't think it is a problem with the SRM 350's. The sound to the headphones works so I don't think it is a level problem with the channel (the same thing happens on channel 1 and 2, I haven't tried every channel). It is only going from the main outs to the SRM 350's and still the signal gets there, it is just so faint it is unusable.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Check the assign buttons--there should be a set for every channel. It's the small black buttons to the right of the channel fader. There's 1-2, 3-4, and MAIN. Turn everything DOWN on the 2442 first, send a signal to the channels you're using, engage the MAIN buttons on the two channels you're sending out, adjust the levels on the trim pots at the top of the strip (set them at 9.00 to start), and slowly bring the faders up. You should be getting a nice healthy reading on the meters, and all should be okay. Adjust the speaker volume. Does this help? Let us know. At any rate, if those meters aren't showing signal, something's wrong. Judging from the observations you made (the faint signal you hear is a bit of the hot signal leaking into the inactive electronics), it's the channel assign buttons. You didn't mention them, but I know they are there. Next, read the manual--it's fairly easy to get up and running with a mixer like this, and you absolutely need to know about "gain staging"--the proper level of signal at each point in the chain.

You need to move the MASTER faders up, too, in addition to the channel faders--forgot to mention that. You do have the MASTER outs going out to the powered Mackies?

Yes I had set the gain (all the way at the top of the column of knobs) and eventually had to turn that all the way up. I did use the little channel assign button to assign the channel to the main mix. I read the instructions they had for getting things set up and started and I still can't get it to work. You are right though that it does almost sound like bleed over getting to the speakers. I do get good lights on the meters and as I said, I do get good sound to the headphones. I will have to go back and see if turning the assign button off stops what little sound is going to the speakers. The speakers have to be turned up all the way just to hear what little signal is going out.

I know this should be easy and straight forward, that's why I am so frustrated. There aren't that many things to set.

Thanks

And yes the main outs go to the Mackies and the master fader and the channel fader are both up.

Okay--obviously you shouldn't have to turn the trim pot at the top of the strip all the way up. (or the faders!) Try sending the signal out through the CONTROL ROOM outs. Also, try setting the assign button to either submix 1+2 or 3+4. Obviously, you need to send cables out of those, or you can assign them to the master and see what happens.
Also, make sure you don't have the cables going to the Mackies plugged into the MAIN inserts. I've done this by accident before. The insert jacks are close enough to the MAIN outs to make this a possibility.
