So, all in all the session went okay.

It could have gone better.

I had an issue that was unexpected (but isn't that always the case? hah) So, everything is going fine during the first set, and then BAM! The device freezes up, and the recording stops mid-song DOH! I've never seen this happen before, but then, I haven't tried to record continuously for extended time periods either.

I just had to reselect in the preferences to get it started again, but it happened again during the 2nd set twice, once about 20min in, and again about 10min after that. I set the preferences to ignore ASIO reset messages, but that didn't seem to help. I also turned off the limit tracks to 1024MB, still nada. I wonder if something overloaded. I didn't see any indications on the mixer though. Everything was pretty much between 0 and 4dBU. It's driving my OCD nuts >_<

Anyway, The band, (The Kansas Thorp Band) was good, and I think I managed to get a decent sound overall for a first time doing a live session. The guy that got me involved, Robbie Youngland, used to play in a band called Black Diamond along with the drummer. There were some issues on their end as well. The wireless mic wasn't exactly reliable for a song or two in the second set. Since he has a basement studio, I can probably get him to send me another take as an overdub. He told me he was going to record their keyboardist after they decide which songs would benefit the best from adding keys, and I'll probably get that to mix in later as well.

I didn't have much room to work with, and the bar doesn't have its own PA, so the band brought its own PA and lights. They relied on the amps and drums themselves for the sound, and just ran vocals through their PA. So I ran vox to my board, but it was an unbalanced signal, so there is a smidge of hum, not -too- bad, but I can gate it/filter it without hurting the vocals too much I think.

I mic'd the bass/guitar amps. I didn't really have a 2nd low-end dynamic with me, so I tried a 57 on the bass amp, which I think turned out okay. The electric guitar came through having a really nice warm clean tone. (due to limited room) kick mic on the beater side of the drum, and an overhead angled toward the snare, but on the cymbals side. It turned out okay, though I'm gonna need to EQ the kick a bit as there is a little bit of a "pong" to it. I was going to put up a 2nd overhead, but there really wasn't enough room. It came out okay though. (I need to get some shorter stands for the kick in the future)

I'll get some tracks posted when I get 'em mixed. Overall, I think it will be an okay sound. It was certainly a learning experience though. After having been through it once, I think I know a few things I would have done differently, as well as some things I'll need to consider getting to be a little more prepared for events like this in the future.

Nice. Sounds like a great experience. I wonder if the freezing was due to some internal memory getting filled up?

Yeah, maybe. I mean that laptop has 4GB RAM.

The only other thing I can think of is the firewire chipset. I'm pretty sure its a TI chipset, not VIA. So it should be fine. I never had problems with the Echo interface on it.

For now, in the future rather, I'll just stop/restart the recording between songs. It seemed fine over shorter intervals, and the lock-up didn't really start until almost a half hour in, so that should be fine.

I did a quick "scratch" headphone mix at the coffee shop to test the waters a bit, and see what needed to be done. I'm confident the instrumentals will sound good. The drums sound pretty good, and the guitar/bass came through nicely.

The only really bad issue is that damned wireless mic flaking out in the 2nd set. Only thing I can think of is to just bite the bullet, and re-track the lead vocal in the guy's basement studio.

I will say though, the girl has a good voice. She has a nice bit of presence and it comes through nicely when the mic isn't fading or flaking out. Anyway, I'll send him an e-mail Monday to see if we can arrange a time to re-track potentially. Of course, I'll still do the mix as is, and get it polished as I can before then so that there will still be a good sense of coherency.

I've only tried bringing my recording stuff (laptop/interface/mics) to another location besides my own house a couple times and it seems like every time there's an issue. Recording gear has a serious case of separation anxiety with my house.

Can't wait to hear the mixes.

Just uploaded a snippet of one of the covers they did. It's in my music profile here on HRC. It is Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." The snip is about a minute long.

I think this is one of the tracks that turned out better. I don't think it's too rough a mix compared to the raw tracks, and I've made a lot of progress EQing out unwanted noise while attempting to keep the source sounding good.

I got to a good foundation for the whole project, and now I'm using the settings as a template and splitting the individual songs up to work on them, well, individually heh. Mostly just need to tame some dynamics (mostly bass and vox), and make adjustments flavour-wise at this point I think. But yeah, it's coming along pretty decently I think.

UPDATE:
Just uploaded a cover of the Patsy Cline song, "Walkin' After Midnight." It's in my profile.

I did my best to edit out/tame plosives and sudden rises in volume in a couple spots. I think I'm pretty close to the sound I want for the whole project now. I don't think I'm going to do much else to the track unless the client wants a different sound. My goal was for a good warm sound, and hopefully avoid low-end mud. Vocals are pretty up front, so I might eek them back a smidge, but other than that, I'm digging the sound.

My wife, however, now has a rising detesting of Patsy Cline, haha!
