One of my biggest issues usually when I mix is snare. I've been studying up and practicing and trying to get the snare to have weight AND cut through the mix. What I've discovered is that roominess and not neccesarily just reverb is what gives the snare the umph and then regular stuff like compression and eq gives it the crack.
So heres a re-mix of the devotion and desire cover I did a while back with some snare tweakage. My old cover was also a bit muddy so I tidied everything up a bit. Thoughts?

Apr 07, 2012 12:31 pm OK, clearly I need to add some validation to this soundcloud feature...

Apr 07, 2012 03:19 pm Nawwwwwwww! Validation? pfft. xD
Okay, I'm at a pizza joint listening on my clipon headphones (pair of phillips somethingorother)
The mix sounds good to me. The snare cuts through just fine, though it sounds tuned a little low to me. It's a beefy snare as opposed to say a snappy higher pitched snare, but it's fine. ITS FINE! :)

Apr 10, 2012 08:17 am sounds too loud to me, but when yer honing in on things it happens. I agree man, snares can be a slurry. Parallel compression might be worth a try.
I really dig the snare sound in this just seems to stick out in realation to everything else. Gets you thinking... shiz, maybe ive been trimming everything else too much.
I find with snare very little comp works for me better, but im thinking lately im gonna go down the parallel comp line but this time im gonna smash the shiz outta the whole kit and get the release to pump in time with the song so its noticable on the peaks, which means duping the original track before eqing and using those meaty peaks to get it pumping overly so for this compression track..

Apr 13, 2012 10:19 am Silverstein fan, by chance? I just went and saw them with my wife two months ago; she's a huge fan.
Anyway... compared to some of the bands she listens to, snare sounds appropriate to me. Maybe come down a notch or two on the volume. Vocals may seem too loud after doing that though... so perhaps bring both down both. I really don't know though... as I'm speaking out of my ***!

Apr 13, 2012 03:35 pm Couple of things for me on this one... sounds like a lot of (too much??) attack on the kick. IMO I hear too much of the beater. Not sure that the snare is too loud but with the sound of the kick I think it gets to be a bit too much in that frequency range. Perhaps try and notch the kick down a bit around 4-5k.
Apr 14, 2012 01:19 am I agree with you guys that in my attempt to get a more pronounced snare I ended up with a snare that is too loud. It's a work in progress.
As for the kick, again in retrospect I agree. I usually mix metal/hardcore where it's all about attack. I'm trying to work out the kinks of mixing more standard rock/alternative sounding drums without them getting lost in the mix.
And I enjoy Silverstein when they come on my pandora. I saw them once too, they were headlining a tour with Chiodos I think. Or Chiodos was heading, I forget. Good show tho.
Thanks for the input guys. This is the only music/mixing/recording forum I ever go to. All the other ones intimidate me ._.
