ADAT recording

I inherited a Behringer Ultragain Pro-8 ADA8000, 8 inputs and 8 outputs, along with its computer (Marian Marc 8 input soundcard), and light pipe (ADAT) connections between the two.

The computer has Cool Edit Pro installed as a recording programme. Should I be able to record straight on to this from the above?

I can't seem to do so. I selected the Marian Marc soundcard everywhere that I could find (Audio devices on the control panel, and Options: devices/device order in Cool edit.I plugged my bass into the jack input of Channel 1 on the Ultragain and clicked "Record" on Cool Edit. I am used to Cool Edit so I knew how to do this. This is what happened:

- the top strip of the level monitor showed an input (I could not get any audio i.e.hear anything)

- The carrier strip (it you can call it that) trundled along as if recording, but there was no wave pattern on it.

- When I played it back there was nothing there.

Somebody let me into the secret.
Thanks

Did you select the Marion Marc as the input at the track (there is a button called "In", I think, in the box to the left of the where the wave is displayed in the track in Cool Edit). It should be near the little red R button to arm the track for recording.

I'm sat at a different computer at the moment, with no optical or Marian Marc.
Certainly on this one there's no "In" button on the track.

I'll go down tomorrow morning and check in the studio (too cold now, and I'm off to a band practice), I didn't notice an "In" button here, but it would make sense as the way to select the separate track inputs. On the Device Order there's a list of Marc A 1-2; Marc A 3-4; Marc A 5-6 ;Marc A 7-8 (i did select Marc A 1-2 here).

Thanks, I'll let you know.

You won't have the "In" button (it might not be called "In" but something close to that) in the wave view, only the multitrack view. If you are in the multitrack view, there is definitely a button that lets you select which channel of your input device cool edit will record from.

Hi Coolo.
Instead of the IN button it's a right click on the track. Found it anyway.
Seem to think I did that before. Anyway this time I turned everything up (to nearly full though on the "Ultragain") and managed to get a decent sized trace along the timeline, and when I listened to it, it was fine.

Also put two separate tracks in simultaneously, 1a and 1b, i.e Right and Left. That worked too.

Still not in the clear though: not sure how you monitor what you are playing if you plug the instrument in direct? I have tried adjusting the ouput settings but it doesn't help. If you play through the amp (so you can hear yourself) and connect from "pre-amp out" that works. Is that how you're supposed to do it? Bit awkward for the vocals unless you go through a desk of course.

The way I do it for vocals is I send the mic to a preamp, the preamp to the soundcard/interface, then out from the soundcard to a small mixer. Then coming from the soundcard I have a stereo pair that plays what the computer is playing and that goes into one channel on a small mixer. Additionally from the soundcard I have a mono line which is playing the input from the preamp going into another channel on the mixer. Then I use heaphones plugged into the mixer to monitor, while adjusting the 2 channels to get a decent levels mix between what is coming in from the mic and what is already recorded on the computer (previously laid tracks).

Not sure if that helps you at all, considering it is not your setup, but maybe it will spark an idea.

It is my set-up now, but what I want to use it for is recording my band - that is 8 tracks simulaneously. The tracks I have done so a test pieces are outstanding quality, and it's made me keen to go this route.

What you describe looks pretty complicated, and a lot of trouble for just one vocal overdub, and very unwieldy if there are another 7 tracks to run alongside it live.

Is there really no way of monitoring the inputs through the computer?
