I have just finished recording this section with distorted guitars, but I am not completely happy with. This is the first time I've tried recording four tracks of guitar.
Here is what I did:
Track 1 - Guitar 1 - panned L75
Track 2 - Guitar 1 - panned L50
Track 3 - Guitar 2 - panned R75
Track 4 - Guitar 2 - panned R50
For Guitar 2, I tweaked the amp settings a bit, and changed the mic position. I pulled out the bright knob, which may have been a mistake. It sounds like it has a little too much sizzle to me. I did manage to dial out some with some EQ work though.
One thing that bothers me, that I can't really get away from, is the room sound. It was recorded in an untreated room, and I have 4 tracks of it. Sounds a little better when I mute 2 tracks, but not quite as powerful.
Maybe I should just re-track guitar 2, and get the amp settings closer to guitar 1? Or should I record Track 1 and 3 with the same amp settings, and then change it up a bit for tracks 2 and 4? Any ideas and opinions would be appreciated. If you have time to take a listen it is under my profile called Distorted Section.

Jan 21, 2012 09:44 pm hey mate, i think its not too bad, it needs eq is all. obviously when you do guitars it takes a while of mucking around over sometime to really dial in the correct settings and placements etc but i think you can make this work.
firstly i would suggie that there is a pretty big need for a 300cut there on all tracks...and it seems there is some dirty bass freq's in there somewhere too.
I would also suggest scooping out the mids quite a bit to get rid of the blocky sound there. This maybe creating the larger/up front than everything else sound it has.
what gear you using man? what is amp vol at sounds like it could be cooking a bit much.
Jan 22, 2012 01:55 am I'm using a Mesa Boogie Mark III into a Trace Elliot 4x12, miced up with an SM57. Volume knob is on 8 and Lead Drive is 8.5. I think I may have had Lead Drive on 9 for Guitar 1. I was kind of wondering if it might turn out better with a little less gain. Sometimes it hard to convince myself that less gain can be better.
I'll try making some EQ adjustments and see if I can make it turn out better. If not, I may just re-track it with some different amp settings. It's only a short section with distortion, so it's not that much of a pain.

Jan 22, 2012 06:45 am do you use pod at all?
a mesa mkiii should be sweet as....what guitar and pick ups?
Jan 22, 2012 10:30 am Yeah, the Mesa is pretty sweet, but it can be a b**** setting it up. It's not a simple plug and play amp. You can get a wide range of tones from it though.
I don't use pod at all, but I have a Roland processor unit, with amp simulators. That's what I used to use for recording, but it doesn't beat the sound of a tube amp.
Guitar is an Ibanez USA Custom with Dimzarzio pickups.
I plan on building some bass traps at some point in the near future, so hopefully that will help.
