But I'm really proud of my most recent mix. It's a cover of a song by A Day To Remember. I need someone to slap me back down to earth with some criticisms because I feel like I should be running a multi-platinum studio.

I'm not an expert on this genre or anything, but this sounds like a very good to mix to me. I really like how the snares pop through the mix.

You know, the one thing that was grabbing at my ears was the snare -- Seems very "long" -- But that's just me (hey, that might be the same snare sound as the original). I'd have some "pointy" thing with a big pre-delayed "puck-kaahh" verb on it (a'la late 80's Metal Church or something).

It doesnt' "sound bad" -- But it sounds sort of like there's [a song] with [a snare drum] --- For lack of more creative use of brackets...

Again, just my goofy $0.02, of course... If that's the sound you're shooting for, well dammit man, you nailed it. :-)

Yeah, this isn't usually how I get my snare sounding. I definitely was going for the original snare sound. I like how it turned out tho. My snare always seems to lack weight, this time its ALL weight lol.

Thanks for the kind words tho guys. :)

Are you playing all the instruments or just drums? Just curious, really.

I play everything in all my covers. I was gonna "sing" it too but it was an embarrassing attempt. It's all yelling.

Listening to it on other systems, I think I may have limited it a bit too much. I was just trying to achieve the same loudness of the original but on smaller speakers it just sounds like mush.

Just a limiter. Waves L2.

dunno if youve tried this but this is what ive been doing and it stops to a degree the limiter pounding the **** outtta transients.

Its probably so totally wrong but i just go by how it sounds.
I basicly compress the whole thing at around 31 to 35 attack and i put a 1:4 ratio with a 600 release. youll notice this seems to just hold everything in place, i guess you can put as much a little on the volume as you want i usually just take off 3 or 4db.\then come limiter time i can fairly smash it with little notice of any real pumping at all.

just listening now to it, yeah i hear what you mean its a little too smashed.
have you ever done a pre master to your drums guitars bass and vox in your project? ie put a slight compress with a slow attack on each instrument buss to reel it in? i have found that helps heaps too, so everything is kinda under control as a seperate instrument before you bounce. This way too i find alot more control overall when it comes time to either compress the master again slightly where the most transients are...or in your case if you wanna just go straight to the L2.

think about how crazy **** is without getting your tracks under control first. How many and how loud those spikes can get
you'll never get the limiter up too loud beofre it starts hitting large spikes then yer screwed.

I usually apply bus compression to the drums and sometimes the guitars. Definitely the vocals. Then I export it all and come back to it in a bit and go into "master" mode in a different project called "master". I only know how to use compression to get good attack, I don't know enough about it to be able to "reel stuff in" or give it any character. Thats why I love the L2. It's so simple :)
