Hi guys! At the moment I'm interning at a small recording studio. Things are going good, and I am starting to get paid for my engineering work (small amounts, but still, money!). I'm happy with my position and am making great contacts and mixing something new every evening to improve my skills.
However, I've just been offered an interview at a much, much bigger recording studio for a paid technical position (read studio equipment maintenance). I love both the technical and artistic side of a studio, but in the long run I want to be an engineer.
I'm hoping to get some advice on which direction to step. Should I continue my internship and slowly build a name for myself, or fast track to this massive facility and see if I can wiggle myself into an engineering position in a few years time?
Of course, its all hypothetical right now as I haven't been given the job :), but what are you thoughts?

Dec 01, 2011 01:20 pm Well, to take things in the order they come, take the interview, you HAVE to.
Secondly; won't you gain a name much, much faster, and a better rep from the larger, better known studio? As well as be exposed to bigger players in the industry?

You're right, I should get to meet a lot of 'names'. My only worry is that I will be trained and placed in the 'tech support' box and waste another year of my life not fully pursuing my dream!
If I do land the job I would still want to intern here on weekends... Not sure how my boss will feel about though, as he's giving me first pick on paid work over 2 other interns for Jan-Feb.
Ahhh. Decisions :-).
I imagine I'm getting a bit ahead of myself though... There are probably a significant number of applicants. I'll take your advice and go for the interview, then play it by ear.
Dec 01, 2011 01:59 pm IMO, people spend too much time worrying about things completely out of their control, and things that haven't even happened yet...
You are in a classic no lose situation...best case, you go to work at a huge studio, even if starting in tech support, much MORE room for growth...worst case, keep doing something you love.

Dec 01, 2011 06:32 pm Yup, dB has nailed it IMO. No use worrying about a job you don't have yet. Go to the interview as if you really want the job. THEN if you are offered the job weigh out all the pro's and con's. Find out all you can about the new job. If you can, try and get some insight into their financial situation before hand. Go to the interview to interview THEM. Remember, IF they offer you a job you can always say no. One final word, if you do decide to take the new position make sure your exit is a smooth transition (read: don't burn any bridges)

Dec 03, 2011 09:53 pm I don't have any idea what you should do, but if you want to exchange mix-checking services you should shoot me an e-mail.
Either way, sounds like you're in a great position to move your career forward.

I wanted to reiterate this because it is important. If you are relatively happy where you are, you need to make sure you would be even more happy moving (if that opportunity is there).
Dec 07, 2011 02:30 pm Interview went OK. They need someone with a UK drivers license, which I don't have (but I can transfer mine). Apart from that I was pretty happy with it.
Waiting for that call back. :-)

Dec 10, 2011 03:33 am in my humble opinion...follow the money! getting paid to do what you love is one of the greatest things in life, next to having kids....i'd follow the money, and sacrifice "the dream" for now....it's a step in the right direction, and could lead to the ultimate goal of being a well paid engineer....until then take the cash for what you can get...atleast you are in your proper field of interest (which is more than i can say for myself...hell i'm stuck in a freakin' deli for the foreseeable future, cuz i need the insurance for my family)....priority is a mofo....BUT if you can step in the right direction, do what you love, it'll show in your work....what's the saying? do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life....i'd take the paying gig for now, and work tward the bigger life goal....take it from me, i slice meat now, not tracks! lol i'd kill to have a swing at a paying gig cleaning and soldering gear, but my lifes circumstances say it's just not feasible at the moment.
all the best CS! i live vicariously through you! yer a good guy and i like hearing all these good things commin' yer way! keep it up bro, and everything will fall into place.
P.S. falling in love and getting married can/will change everything! not that i have any regrets, but i had to let the dream go (mostly) because my wife/stepdaughter are more important to me now......jus keep that in mind yo.
Dec 17, 2011 03:47 pm Still waiting. Emailed the guy, says they're still deciding.
In the meantime, go like the studio I work for currently www.facebook.com/SohoSonicStudios :-)
Had a fun session today. Recording a little girl for a new iPad game coming out. She couldn't say 'Walrus'. It came out like 'Wawrus' hehe.
