recording simultaneous multi channel Adobe Audition

Hi all,
I need to record vocal and piano live, both tracks at the same time. I have an external soundcard (EMU 0404) which has only 2 inputs, which means that both vocal and piano is mono. so I thought to connect the soundcard to the mixer and I put mic and the keyboard to the mixer. In Adobe audition this time if I press the record button in 2 tracks, both tracks record both instruments. Could anyone help me what I need to change in the settings so that the software could separate the channels in the mixer, so both piano and vocal would be separated?
Thank you!

Are you recording mono sources to stereo tracks?

You just need one input to go to one (mono) track and the other input to go to another. If you're recording through a mixer, the same thing applies -- Route one channel to one input. If you're recording a mix of channels, there is no way to separate them later (just as there's no way to separate a cake into flour, sugar, eggs, etc.).

what I did so far is that I connected the sound card and the mixer with two jack cable, left to left, and right to right, so it communicates as stereo. I plugged the keyboard into the mixer into one channel, and the second channel I plugged the mic. In Adobe audition when I record I don't know how to record the piano (going to the mixer channel 1) in one track and the mic (from mixer channel 2) in another track. The only way I could do before without a mixer that I straight plugged into the soundcard one to the left, the mic to the right and in Adobe audition for one track I say Analog A, the other track B and it recorded separately. But through the mixer now everything going to the mixer it records in both tracks. what do I do wrong? Would be nice to have the piano stereo but of course I don't want the vocals in so I could effect later. I am not really a technical person, and don't really have help around. Thank you!

You need one input per mono source (or two inputs per "stereo" source). There's no way around that.

If you only have two inputs and you want to record a piano onto a stereo track (which is really only two split mono tracks, but I digress), you'll have to record the piano independently and record other sources (vocals, etc.) after.

If you have multiple sources going into the mixer and you're pulling the L/R outputs, you're going to wind up with a mix of whatever the mixer is outputting.
