Please help me select a laptop with the right processor.

Hey all,

I have a choice between two laptops. Both cost the same.

The first one's specs are:
AMD Phenom II X4 N970 2.2GHz processor
4GB of DDR3 memory, 640GB Hard Drive

And the second one's:
Intel Core i5-480M 2.66GHz Processor
6GB DDR3 Memory, 640GB Hard Drive

I have Guitar Rig 4, Reason 5, Record 1.5 and Sony Acid Pro 7. I'll be using the laptop mainly to record my guitar tracks and create drums. Maybe a few synths here and there.

So, given my needs, which processor is the better of the two? If you think one is better than the other under these circumstances, please state your reasons.

A little more elaborately:

I know I5 performs better and faster when it comes to linear instances or using only two cores. However, will the four cores in Phenom, despite its slower speed, prove to be better with the aforementioned DAWs? Or will the DAWs use I5's multithreading capabilities to a bigger advantage as opposed using four cores?

I appreciate your patience. Thank you.

Which DAW do you use?

Hey,

I use Sony Acid Pro 7 or Record 1.5 for recording my guitar and such. Reason 5.0 will be for composing the percussion and maybe a few synths.

So considering two cores/four threads vs. quad core, which processor do you think is better?

crap...its been awhile since i've shopped computers....ummm for what you're using software-wise...(no mention of audio interface, but i'll assume firewire or USB 2 or better)....anything with two cores and two gigs of ram or better sould run everything you mentioned just fine....but i think yer splittin' hairs although i sympathize deeply when it comes to gettin' a new toy such as this, splittin' hairs can make or break a good machine...so in that case, i know nothing about new mobo's these days......slong as it is stable....that's all that matters.

Oh. The thing is, I'm currently using a laptop that has 2 GB of RAM and Core 2 Duo processor. Acid Pro takes ages to start up and isn't very cooperative when I have other applications running alongside. On top of that, when I start piling up tracks, the sound begins to fuzz up. I mean, the laptop starts producing distortion without any overdrive haha.

I s'pose 2 GB of RAM may be enough, but I really think I need a processor upgrade.

If acid 7 truly utilizes multicore support efficiently (audition makes good use with high buffers during mixdown) then I would say a quadcore would make a difference. I would definitely have at least 4-6GB but more importantly a 7200rpm or solid state hard drive.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm kind of leaning towards the Quad Core myself. The laptop supports up to 8GB of memory so guess I can upgrade if I ever need to.

As for the fast hard drive, do I really need it? I don't have any plans on working with a band to record multiple tracks at the same time. Rather, I'll be piling one track at a time. Or do powerful effects tax a 5400rpm hard drive? In that case, can the hard drive be switched for a better one later on?
