Do I have my computers audio connected to my mixer properly?

so i am new to recording, but i am quickly starting to pick it up. although there is one problem that i am having, that i can't get a grip on.

i've got an allen and heath zed r16 mixer (has an in-built audio interface) that is connected to an imac via firewire. i then have my krk rokit 8 monitors connected to the two 2 track 1 out XLR connections on my mixer. it is working fine, as in i can control the monitors volume using my main left and right when i am recording instruments, etc.

now, i want to allow my computers audio to go through my mixer so i can playback the recording or send it to the headphones to then record the next instrument, eg vocals.

to do this, i have got 2 audio RCA cables (red and white), plugged into the 2 track 2 in jacks on my mixer, going to a headphone end to plug into the headphone jack on my imac (because i couldn't find any other way to connect to the computer).

it is working fine, but my only problem is when i allow my computers audio to come through the mixer, my main left and right don't do anything and the imac's volume adjustment becomes the volume control.

why is it doing this? is it normal or have i got it plugged in wrong?

the audio should travel from the computer to the mixer via firewire (digital)...somewhere in the mixer's settings (possibly on the software side) is a way to set your mac's digital output to the monitors (which are hooked up properly).....

also check yer recording software's audio settings and look for a master out to digital output....

by the way SWEET BOARD!!! i havn't seen it before, looks mighty fine to me though.

welcome to HRC!

ahh ok i get ya now, shall muck around and see if i can find it. cheers for that.

i have pulled out the RCA to headphone cable, but i am still stumped as to where i can find it to change it.

when i do find it and allow it, it will allow everything to come through won't it, not just the recording DAW'S audio?

in my macs system preferences under sound, it gives me the option of changing the output to my mixer instead of the built in speakers. could that be it?

yes ALL audio going into and out of your computer should go through the mixer now...you have 'replaced' your internal soundcard.

yes!!! i understand it now. when i go to change it in my mac's sound output, its saying that the selected device has no output controls?? whats that?

and when i do get it working, will i need to press a button on the mixer to allow it to come through... or will it just come through naturally?

should be able to press power (after computer is booted)....as far as your selected device having "no output controls", i strongly disagree IT'S A MIXER!!...try it anyway...it should work just fine....if not, i can't say i can help ya much as i know NOTHING about mac's.

good news is, this will all be resolved soon.
