Picking drum heads

I need to replace the heads on my snare and kick drum. The kick is a Slingerland 21"(22"?)x14 circa 1970-1980, and the snare is a Pearl Omar Hakim Signature 13"x5.

I've only used coated Evans head in the past, and was thinking about trying the Aquarian stuff.

For kick: I think I prefer to avoid the foam/rubber ring style ring in favor of a louder, attacky batter head, but I'm open to alternative opinions that include descriptions of the difference between a regular head and a foam/rubber ring head. I'm not looking for the click/boom sound of a lot of metal drums I hear today. I prefer to have a raw, 'thuddy' sound with lots of midrange, Beatles style. What about the resonant head? How do the different resonant head porting options effect tone? No port vs 7 inch port? For the sake of recording, the 7" ported hole in the center sounds ideal so I can stuff my D112 in and out with ease (that's what she said).

For snare: Something bouncy (which should be any new drum head, right?), and I prefer a high and tight snare sound. Like Animal Collective self titled or Minus the Bear Menos el Oso mayhaps? I have no idea on the resonant head...

ah...found some qualitative descriptions on their website. If you have any specific recommendations I'm all ears, all the same.

Well.. I can't offer much advice since it sounds like what I prefer isn't what you're looking for. However, I can only swear by what I use so I'm laying out there anyway.

Evans heads all the way around.
Toms: G2 clear Batter, G1 clear Resonant
Kick: EQ3 Batter (built in O ring (not foam ring), Whatever for resonant with port hole.
Snare: Power Center Batter, Haze 300 or G1 clear Resonant

Thanks Hippie. I prefer tom heads without coating too, and I hear great stuff about the EQ3 on kick for that punchy bass drum. I definitely like that, but like you said, I'm going for a different sorta kick tone.

I ended up getting an Aquarian American Vintage batter head for the kick, supposed to be something like calf skin with a felt ring. Doing a 7" ported resonant head with that.

I am getting a snare head with a power center like feature, it's a coated Aquarian head. They put the power dot underneath the head instead of on top so it's easier to play with brushes, seemed neat to me so I'm giving it a shot. Hey...you metal dudes should use brushes, why not? Hard for me to imagine when that would be appropriate...but it could work!
