hey guys, how yinz doin? been a while.

i need to pick up some decent headphones on the cheap. how cheap? too cheap. i want to spend no more than 40 dollars, and less than that would be better. i've tried two pair so far. first pair was unusable, really boxy sounding. the second set were sonys. they were very boomy, also unusable.

in the past i've owned earbuds which sufficed for mixing.

monitors are not an option for me. it's headphones or nothing.

so whatever i get here, they just have to be adequately clear and balanced and under 40 bucks.

does anyone have any ideas at all? something that you've actually used to mix/record with and which you were pleased with?

thanks

I got a pair of headphones at Radio Shack a while back are about $12 on sale (regular around $24) and they are really surprisingly good, might be worth a look...by default for phones I usually say Sony models, but none of them are in your price range.

I hope all is well, forty, good to see ya.

Headphones for "listening pleasure?" Plenty.

Headphones for critical listening and mixing accuracy? They don't exist.

Then just don't expect much. Even a "reference" headphone (I use Grado SR225's myself and find them ridiculously accurate) isn't an acceptable substitute for air and space. You could get lucky, you could get used to some things, but you're not going to beat physics.

massivemaster, everyone knows you're a pro. i knew you'd be the first one to chime in here; i knew what your response would be. it's totally correct--if you're someone like you, someone who earns their bread and butter with this.

i don't have the money for great phones. if i did, i still wouldn't spend it on headphones.

somewhere out there, there's a pair of phones for under a hundred bucks that's perfect for what i need to do. and someone's gotta make something really cheap that at the very least doesn't spike obviously (in such a way that it's obvious even to someone like me) on certain frequencies and doesn't have huge gaping holes around certain freqs. earbuds can do that. a cheap headphone should be able to as well.

i'll try radio shack, db

i found a couple that will suffice i think. earpollution makes 'em. tried a pair out and didn't immediately notice any glaring holes or spikes. for what my ear's currently capable of, they should do for now.
