hi, im new.. probably an annoying question.
im trying to decide on a sound card and am unclear on some things..
i have a hp laptop with an amd anthlon II p320 dualcore 2.1ghz, 4gb ram, a 7200 rpm drive, usb2, no firewire input, and windows 7 64. im thinking about the tascam us-1641 .. is 8 simultaneous tracks even possible with my laptop?? how many is?
thanks!

USB2, 2.1 dual with 4GB of RAM and a 7200 hard drive, it could be possible, you'd be redlining it though I am sure.

The first thing I'd look to would be the hard drive. It may not like to lay down 8 tracks at once.

A second hard drive would make it a little nicer. Let windows play with the C drive, and record to the external drive.

Otherwise, I don't think you'd have a problem recording 8 tracks at once.

course, that's my opinion only.

I think you can do it. During mixdown it would not be the most powerfull beast but I tracked 12 tracks via firewire and 8 via USB (all 44.1) on my old dell. Dual Core 1.86, 3GB, 5400rpm drive running windows vista. I added firewire with a card.

Anyway, I know it can be done but laptops are alot more picky than a desktop. Mine for instance would not work if I had wireless on.

That Tascam U1641 is dirt cheap and plenty of (more than enough) channels to get started with. Not sure on their drivers but I have not heard anything horrible. I currently use a line6 UX8, I like it alot and it can be found pretty cheap as well.
