M-Audio Delta 1010LT + preamp/mixer?

So I'm finally planning to enter this century, and start recording with a computer.. :)

I'm looking for a cheap solution with at least 8 inputs and Pro Tools-compatibility. The M-Audio Delta 1010LT seems to fall into that category, assuming I can find a reasonably priced preamp/mixer.
For example, would the SM Pro Audio PR8E work? www.smproaudio.com/index....ts/preamps/pr8e It has balanced TRS outs, so it seems to me that it wouldn't? And the pre's can't be wery good in that price range?
Another low-price option would be to find a used analog mixer with outputs for each channel.

Or what would you suggest?

That model (and setup in general) feels pretty outdated to me considering how many soundcards u can buy nowadays with much better analog to digital conversion AND quality preamps.

Y r u tied to ProTools? just asking since that will really limit ur options, im not even sure the 1010 will allow u to hook up with protools but i dont really know.

The line 6 UX8 has 8 ins and outs and the preamp modeling software gives u a ton of options for about the same price or maybe lower than ur proposing. Ive said it before but i love the new Focusrite units, they also have 8 ins and pres as well.

Im prettysure all the major players have 8 i/o units now with pres that would make ur life much easier than having to hook up a bunch of equipment.

Well, I don't really know anything about software business, but in all the studios I've visited they used pro tools, and it seemed very user-friendly. And the M-Powered -version isn't very expensive. But if all the other recording software can get the job done, it really makes no difference...

Actually, I was also considering usb 2.0 interfaces, and this one seemed like a good bang-for-the-buck: www.tascam.com/product/us-1641/ Any experiences/opinions?

Edit: The Line 6 interface you suggested is more expensive, and seemes to have only 8 inputs..? With the Tascam, I assume you could use a preamp with the line inputs fore more tracks at once.

User friendly sure, but not so cash friendly protools is since it requires very specific gear that usually costs a bundle

I had a friend who used a tascam unit once, he didnt like the stability of its drivers but tahst only one case. Yes that unit seems to offer 8 pres and 8 seperate line ins for a total of 16 trax so definitely if ur looking for lots of inputs that should be sweet

Id recommend using the firewire connection though as there must be a reason u dont see a ton of USB 2.0 units taht allow more than 8 tracks, but im no expert in the matter.
