AKG C 1000 S or Shure KSM 137/SL

I'm in the market for a couple of new mics. Primarily I'll be using them for recording drums as over heads both live and in the studio. But I'd also like to get something versatile enough to record other instruments as well (acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, etc). I've narrowed my search to these two and they seem pretty equivalent. What say you, AKG C 1000 S or Shure KSM 137/SL?

Thanks!

I generally do everything in my power to avoid C1000S's. For mandolin and banjo? It would be like putting a cheese grater inside your eustachian tube.

THAT SAID -- I couldn't tell you much about the 137. I could certainly recommend the SM81 for all three instruments.

I bought an AKG C1000s a few years ago. I used it twice then gave it to my little brother :( For the price there are so many better things I could have spent the money on.

This is good info and exactly what I'm looking for, thanks! I guess the search continues. I'm looking to spend ~$600 for a pair. I could do more if it was really worth it. I'll check out the SM81. Any other suggestions. Again, mainly for overheads on drums, but also would like to use them as instrument mics from time to time.

AKG C-391B's. Probably a little pricier than the 81's... But seriously, in that price range, I can't even imagine a better bang-for-the-buck in a "deserted island" mic than the 81.
