making the FW to USB leap......advice?

Hello all...

My M-Audio FW 1814 is dying on me, and I need a new interface. I have read a lot about USB 2 being very, very good.

I have been told to check out M-Audio Fast Track Ultra...but I'm kinda leery of M-Audio now. My 1814 is 3 years old and Mic 1 is now noisy, and Mic 2 doesn't even work. Also getting horrible clicks & pops & distortion even though I downloaded the newest driver for Win 7.

I can only spend around $300, and only need a few I/O, (2 XLR, phantom pwr, a few balanced, and maybe MIDI).

Any suggestions?

You could also look at the line6 UX series. the UX2 or UX8 might suit your needs, but they don't have a midi port.

I know at least one guy around here has one of the tascam interfaces for some time and swears by it, so you could look at something like the US1641 which may be more than you need, but fits in your price range, or maybe one of the smaller interfaces.

If you wanted to stay with FW, I'd suggest looking at the Echo Audiofire 4 (which is what I have) I've had it for at least 2 years now without so much as a hiccup. Any pops or clicks were on the DAW side from having too many VST loaded up on an older computer.

Oh, and welcome to HRC!
