Package for mash tunes?

Hi
I'm a DJ and I need to create some exclusive mixes to play during my sets. I'd like to make some mash ups - welding the vocals from one song to the backing tracks of another, as they seem to fill floors when I play other people's. I want to do this on a PC - which has a latency problem with the soundcard that's fitted, incidentally. Can anyone suggest a package that would enable me to mix-n-match tunes and add samples, add parts from a midi keyboard, etc?

Just to make this more complicated, it would be good if it could also handle more regular home recording, as my brother plays the guitar and would also like to make some demos.

I am in the UK. I'm on a budget so I can't spend thousands of ££££££.

Thanks for all suggestions - much appreciated.

You could try, Ableton live. I found it difficult to work with the 2 or 3 times I tried it, but some people swear by it.

Many onboard sound devices are a problem with latency.

You'll want to look into something as an audio interface. There are many, like maudio, EMU, Motu, RME, Line6, Tascam, presonus, focusrite, and others.

I'm gonna guess that you'll be on a laptop, so probably a USB or firewire device would be appropriate. Also, probably 2 or 4 channels will do you well, maybe 4 would be better, as you can have 2 channels coming in from keyboard, maybe 2 from microphones, or something else.

I think maudio has a fast-track ultra, or something similar that is USB and sports 6 or 8 ins and outs.

Yep, here's a link: www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUltra.html

That would work a treat, I'd think.

350 USD = 229.2129 GBP

Course that's just a rough guestimate.

You can go with 2 ins, and 2 outputs for cheaper. Maudio makes less I/O devices, for around 200$us. There's also firewire devices, but they usually are a little more spendy. Maybe it's worth it, but I kinda don't think so. My 2 port Tascam US122 does quite well.

hth.
