UAD's PMB is one of very few that I've ever used that wasn't rather heavy-handed right off the bat. And it makes a much better frequency-conscious expander than it ever will a maul-the-band compressor (but that's for another thread).

That said - I generally do whatever I can to avoid them if at all possible. UAD's really is pretty great when you need something like that. Ozone I've never liked. The MBC native to Samplitude is quite good...

Sorry - I guess that's really not much help... Other than "If something is screwed up enough to need MBC, it probably won't matter 'which one' all that much anyway."

Cubase comes with one bundled with it. It's a pretty capable MBC, at very least its plenty to get started with.

" if something is as screwed up? doesnt matter which one "
lol, dont get that at all. everyone i know uses it in their mixes, hence the reason i know what mbc is. ive found it makes my mixes sound much better

i have the samplitube one, didnt do much for me.
& i found t-sledge yesterday, pretty decent so far

UAD's great, if u can afford a setup aha. maybe in a month or 2

Im not a fan of the Ozone one at all, all together i think Ozone stuff is more geared towards very electronic music like dance or techno. I use the Waves Linear Multiband when i do.

Samplitude - Not Samplitube. Totally different and unrelated things.

This is where I don't want to come off sounding --- eh... sounding...

Very few engineers I know ever use MBC except as a band-aid for something that went wrong. Thwumpy guitars (bad cabinets, too much gain, bad palming technique - should have been fixed earlier), sibilance (poor vocal technique / mic placement - should have been fixed earlier), clacky bass guitar (old strings, poorly-set up action - should have been fixed earlier) and the like.

I won't even go into the mastering phase where MBC is always marketed as a normal part of the mastering process (where again, it's a very, very rare engineer I know that'll use one on a mix that isn't wrecked).

If you truly think it's making your stuff sound better, you should find out what's wrong and correct it at an earlier stage.

i meant d, obviously

& yeh thats good to know, i dont wanna get into a whole thing here.. but if it sounds better then what's the problem lol?

but if your saying mbc is last resort type thing then maybe ill backtrack a bit in the recording process, athough im recording through sim amps n stuff so idk exactly what could be done as far as cabinets n gain ect. thanks for the info though

btw just got waves linear, it's what i needed cheers crux

No problem - There was some sort of Samplitube thing out at some point and I don't even remember what it was.

But you tried Samplitude... Arguably the greatest audio engine ever conceived with the most amazing native effects ever developed --- and you weren't impressed...?

I just checked out Samplitude for the first time...I had no idea it was a package worth considering. The more I investigate alternate DAW's, the more it seems irrelevant which one I use. I base my conclusions off of aesthetics and intuitive workflow. Am I missing an important variable when I judge these DAW's?

The free one you can get with reaper in the reaplugs pack is quite nice. ReaXComp.

Very nice, and easy to use.

"I base my conclusions off of aesthetics and intuitive workflow."

Same as this^ guy, MM, It didn't suit the way I work and the level of actual skill I have lol, The MBC didnt really stand out amongst the others I had, I use some of the plugs sometimes though

I like Waves Linear Phase MBC, easiest to use atm and imo better results than the t-sledge, ozone,, sonitus mbc

Samplitude (& it's brother Sequoia) turned into almost the defacto standard mastering application in the U.S. over the past decade or so due to it's amazingly clean audio engine and the freakishly usable built-in DSP. Plus it gave mastering guys more "mix-friendly" flow -- It was a recording/mixing program that happened to author compliant media. Start-to-finish in one program.

But it really shines as a tracking/mixing application --

Object-based editing. It changes everything.

And these later versions (v.11 specifically) is just insane. Up to and including VSTi's (which I didn't bother installing), loop libraries (ditto), convolution verbs (again, no big deal here), a new collection of very DSP-friendly effects, etc., etc., etc.

No doubt - there's a bit of a learning curve. But IMO/E, there is no other DAW that can touch it. Not even a fair fight anymore.

Granted - They could improve their U.S. presence (which they're in the middle of at the moment) and I freaking hate their dongle system (mostly because I had a dongle fail on me once at the most wrongiest time possible), but I also freaking hate pirates - So I'll deal with it.
