Cubase: No sound through controller when in VST window

Hi all, I've just decided to get back into recording after about 10 years away (Jeez, it's changed a bit!) so I'm a newbie who will probably have tons of questions in the near future.

The problem I'm trying to get round at the moment is that when I open up a VST instrument there is no sound when I hit the keys on my controller keyboard. When the VST window is closed and I'm in the main window or key editor it works fine (apart from latency probs but more questions about that at a later date).

Is there a trick I'm missing to get the sound to work in the VST window?
