CUBASE LE: how to activate the sustain pedal?

I'm recording MIDI in Cubase LE. Any time I press the sustain pedal on my keyboard when I record, 1) I don't hear it back and 2) it "mutes" and "un mutes" the other audio tracks in my project. Therefore, my question is how do I activate the sustain pedal, and once it's activated how do I get it to not affect the other tracks when I use it?
