So, sorry for all that are friends with me on Facebook. You have to read this again.

But, Motion Computing has a Facebook page. And they were running a contest for one of their newest Tablets. The J3400. You had to write an essay on why your Motion Tablet is the best.

The chose me as the winner!

I can't wait for this puppy to come in! I'll let you know how it is when I get it!

Congrats Rob that looks to be one SWEET machine! I used to work for Panasonic's Toughbook repair facility and this model seems to be in the ruggedized notebook ballpark. Tuff as nails! I can imagine how useful that thing could be in the type of environment you find yourself in. We used to have notebooks come in with bullets shot into them; notice I did not say 'through' them. They are quite extreme.

ps- the "for your Children" thing is a running joke I have...with myself I think. Did you ever see that particularly hilarious spam post with the subject line, "Choose Ugg Boots for Your Children"? I thought it was funny that the spam was trying to appeal to the viewers responsibility as a parent. So pretty much any time I recommend a product or see that someone else is recommending a product I spam-u-late it in my head, laugh out loud, then mindlessly post the source of my amusement. I've been meaning to stop doing that...haha

I knew that you worked in the computer field. I had no idea that you worked on the Toughbook. That's Awesome!

And I have a few co-workers that own a Toughbook. And I know how extreme they are.

Do you own one for yourself?

Sorry that I didn't pick up on the running joke. I really don't pay attention to the spam post all that much. Just enough to make a quick comment about it, and then never go back to them again.

Nah I never had a chance to buy one. I also don't really have a need for a notebook with that kind of stopping power. At the time Windows XP was still the best option and the tablet edition of the OS was pretty shaky/useless at the time. Panasonic laptops that aren't ruggedized use the same cheap components all the major manufacturers use, but at the same ruggedized price (like...$1000's in markup!!) Netbooks are my new thing though the last two I bought were stolen...I'm taking a break from laptop ownership.

There were all kinds of awesome problems with the Toughbooks coming to that facility, being that most of the people with support contracts were military. I remember one Army unit that had apparently been sitting somewhere turned on for a very long time. There were separate colonies of bugs living across the main board. There were concentrations of bugs around the integrated graphics chip, the processor and the power supply, and they were more or less segregated by species. I wonder if it had to do with the varying amount of heat given off more or less consistently from the different areas on the computer...

Far and away the coolest thing I ever got to see though was from a CF-51 the Navy sent in. It ran a really confusingly modified Linux based operating system (the GUI didn't look like KDE or GNOME if you're familiar). When I opened the lid the laptop was in sleep mode and hadn't lost its battery life yet (which differentiated it from the tens of other password protected Navy units sent in the same batch.) On the screen was a satellite image from about 5000 ft I'd guess; the on-screen controls included a big red button with a caption in all caps that read, "ARM LASER". While I had no reason to believe the laptop had a live connection to the satellite imagery...

I pressed that button and I hope something awesome happened later because of it. haha

Oh! Is that what happened to Haiti. Quincysan pushed the button! Bastard! :)

Well, just got off the phone with Motion. And they had no idea that our industry was headed in their direction. We talked about all of the sales opportunities That they could have with Digidesign and Yamaha. Plus Clair Brothers and the lighting industry.

Well, at that point, she stated that she was going to upgrade me form the standard package to one of the higher packages!

Hahaha, I wonder how many ballistic mishaps are caused by hitting the big red button on accident.

Hmmm...I'll keep an eye on motion computing and their efforts in catering to DAW's. I'm on the look-out for a professional segue from computers -> computers AND music

I'd be interested in reading your essay whether it's on Facebook or email. Quincy Wofford is my full name.

Hint: There are two Quincy Wofford's who attended the University of Northern Colorado on Facebook...I'm the white one ;-)

Oy, that's a low satellite =)

Ha, congrats Rob. We had one around the shop here, a Motion tablet, and it worked quite nice. The boss man took it home for his own use =/.

On a side note, there's a guy over on reaper board that's made a iTouch / iPad app that controls some faders & transport controls via ipod whichever. It's called AC-7 i think. Looks pretty slick. Works for other apps too, not just R.

No problem Quincy. Here is what I wrote.

My LE1700 is the absolute best Tablet ever. In my job, there is nothing that I can not accomplish with the LE1700. My work takes me to places outside of the office. In all kinds of conditions. As a sound engineer for live events. I needed a computer that is powerful, lightweight, long battery life, and be able to read the screen in all lighting conditions. The LE1700 is the best fit for all of these requierments.

When ever I am on a show, weather it's a large outdoor concert, or a small club. I use my LE1700 to run it all. The Wifi connection with the Tablet has been outstanding. Allowing me to leave our digital mixers on stage, and giving me freedom to be out with the crowd to run the show without any fear of dropouts, or glitches. I know that I have done over 200 shows with the LE1700, and I have never had one single issue. With it's long battery life, I don't have to worry about weather or not the LE1700 is going to last throughout the show. I know that it will.

Back in my work space, I use my LE1700 for all of day to day tasks. Being that it is small and light enough to be carried around the shop. Now I can check the inventory, and make correction, and add or subtract items to an invoice. All without having to run back and forth to a terminal computer. For working on repairs, I can have the schematic of the piece that I am working on right with me. Instead of running to a printer, and having several pieces of paper spreed out all over the shop.

The LE1700 has improved my work space exponentially. I can not imagine going back to running sound for a concert without it. Nor do I wish to. My LE1700 has become the first thing that I reach for when I leave out the door. And I do not dare to leave home without it.

Motion is going to contacting me over the next few weeks. Along with Clair Brothers, and a few other companies. So, with a little luck. They maybe coming out with a special edition Tablet for the music industry.
