How much power for my speakers?

I've been doing a lot of reading and I haven't found any really good answers. I have 2 15" PA speakers (Behringer e1520). 8ohm, 400w peak program. I have been powering them with a Behringer powered mixer, @ 400w per side.

The thing is, the powered mixer sucks. It overheats constantly and just stops working randomly. I need to get a decent power amp to use these in a live setting again. But I don't know what I need.

If I have a board into an amp into the speakers (in stereo), is that considered parallel or series? What would the total impedence be? And the real question: what kind of amp do I need? 400w / channel? I'm a newb at running sound for myself. I've always just been the band member who knows how to play and lets someone else take care of the gear. Anybody have any advice for me?

Hey ericrudnick. Well, it sounds like you may have a shorted output transistor on your self powered mixer.

That may explain why it's overheating and thermaling out. One of the reasons that I am not the biggest fan of self powered mixers.

If you have a board that is not self powered, and your looking for an amp. Then anything that outputs between 400 - 450 watts @ 8 ohms will be great for your set up.

For the wiring, your speakers do not have a jumper spot on them. You will have to either add another jack to them, or you will need a splitter box for them to wire in parallel.

Parallel, is when you are taking the same hot lead to each of the speakers positive (+) jack.

Series, is when you go from the first speakers positive, then out of the negative of the same speaker. And then taking the wire for that negative over to the positive of the next speaker.

So, if you wire in stereo, then it's a non issue. Because, your going form ch 1 of the amp to one speaker. And ch 2 to the next speaker.

You only have to think about series of parallel when your ganging speakers together on one side of an amp.

Here is a link to an article that I have here on the HRC that helps explain all of this.
