Using M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 in WIN 98

Thanks for info on board on all topics ; good stuff.

I greatly desire and have ordered the Audiophile 24/96 to go into my computer ( Millenia MAX 733 with Intel and Via 133A).

Goal is low latency while using Win98SE in Sonar XL. I guess kinda I will either get to use a VXD or WDM or ASIO driver ( I use a Vortex sound card right now). Sonar is ASIO capable now so maybe this is the best low latency route? Any comments on what drivers to use with Audiophile card in Win98SE with Sonar XL 2.2 ?

I am thinking to try and run Vortex soundcard for CD and DVD routine useage and run the Audiophile with Sonar XL for music generation. Audiophile has no internal connector for CD but the M-Audio FAQ says that Win Media Play 7.1 will play CDs OK
with the Audiophile. Any comments on using two sound cards in Win98SE ? I cannot find much help anywhere on how to set up DVD audio playback thru the Audiophile ; I think this requires using the SPDIF connections --- whatever that is.

Guidance welcome on these topics --thanks.

If you go to the M-Audio site www.maudio.com/ and follow the links to the driver download area, the best and most current drivers will be at the top of the list. I am not sure how the ASIO drivers will perform in 98SE, but I know it was a vast improvement over the WDM drivers in WinXP Pro.

As far as running 2 cards in your PC, I run a Creative SB Live along with my Delta 44 and have no problems. I just disable the drivers for the SB in Sonar and away I go. You may have to move the 2496 card to find a slot that wont conflict but you should be able to do it with out too much headache.

Yes, the M-Audio site shows the lastest 98SE driver to be ASIO capable but it is labeled and titled as VXD413142. Drivers for the other OS are labeled WDM but they are implied to be ASIO capable. So, I will try the VXD as see how it goes.

I would transition to XP but the XP analysis program says a good bit of my non-music software will not work. So maybe the thing to do is to transition the music only to XP and run all other stuff under the Win98 option in XP. I have heard this is a great hassle to do however. Ahhh the price of evolution...

Yes, I have experience with moving the cards around to find the best IRQ arrangments. Thankful to have 6 PCI slots !

Audiophile 24/96 in place on latency topic and
driver performance topic especially using Sonar XL.

Which apps do you have that wont run in XP. I have several very old apps that run in it without any trouble. And yes I believe the drivers you mention should be the correct ones. I have switched to ASIO in Sonar 2.2XL running WinXP Pro and my effective latency is down at 8ms. And I can run softsynths and realtime pluggins without any real lag time.

I might also add that Windows XP has a reverse compatiblity feature that allows you to tell XP to run certain applications in different environment, and it works quite well. I have done it several times for my daughters learning games.

Upon install you go to compatiblity mode:

Start > Programs > Accessories > Program Compatibility Wizard

Browse to the program in question, or the setup file on it's CDrom and tell it the OS to emulate (Windows OS's only, duh) and go through like that.

It works awesome, tho does have some bugs. From what I have seen so far with Windows Server 2003 (just set a Windows 2003 server in my home to play with) is that they have improved the compatiblity wizard quite a bit, so the next version of desktop Windows I am guessing will be better, but even now it's pretty darn good.

Yes, but they are still bridged and only have probably 3 IRQ's to share between them, ya gotta find the good one :-)

Good comments, You give me encouragement.
I have finally gotten all apps and all in all working well in Win98SE so I am apprehensive to install XP as the primary OS. I do have 20 Gig
available so maybe I should install it there along with Sonar and " play with it" for a while
as a non-primary OS. Whew. The XP readiness program says I have only a few apps that will maybe not work but they are fairly unimportant prgrams. Then, there are the driver issues...
Epson printer driver, Matrox driver, and many others to deal with ; many advisory sites say that transtion from 98 to XP is a big change and
to approach same cautiously and will take maybe 30
days to iron all out well. I am on a big learning curve already with SONAR and SF2 and how to do drums using GS and XS midi maps using the Blue Bird Implants. Drum work is slowing me down.
I just want to do music but there is always some thing to learn before efficiency and effectiveness comes well on strong. I am not a super computer guru ; I am just a song writer.

My Audiophile will be here in 2 days so I will see if I can get it running OK with the drivers they supply. Big step up from the Vortex soundcard that has great sound but super weak drivers.
