Collabarama - Website experiment

Hey Everyone,

First up, this has been cleared by DB (so i won't have to flag this thread as spam ) :)

Some months ago i was looking for information regarding writing music for the gaming industry. I was shocked to find that there wasn't a great deal of information out there.

It occurred to me that there might be scope to start a website that caters to all sorts of 'cross discipline' pursuits. (i.e Film makers, developers, Musicians, artists etc)

Rather than a professional service seeking to match people up and take a cut i thought it would be great to have a community driven presence for folk to get together and work on projects or just throw around ideas in the forum.

This is clearly a massive undertaking given that there are countless creative collaborations possible.

But i thought I'd have a crack.

The website is what one might consider a BETA site but seems to work ok in a development environment.

I'd love it if you could have a look, maybe register and tell me what you think.

www.collabarama.com

I'll be away for a week from tomorrow so i look forward to hearing what everyone thinks.

All thoughts and critiques are welcome.

Typo alert -> browe (browse)

When mousing over the menu items (nav bar) i'm getting the pop-outs to open under (and to the left a little) of the HOME button. This makes it somewhat difficult to mouse back from Articles -> Development.

I can screen cap if you want to see it.

I'm on XP w/ Firefox 3.5.7

Chome does it as well. 3.0.195.38

IE 8 does as well.

I'm on XP FF 3.5.7 right this minute and it's working fine for me...it's likely you may have some plugin interfering...one issue of have expendable browsers, every now and then weird things happen like that.

Hmm, on 3 browsers, that's odd. I'll have to try a different machine and see what's what.

Oh, you are saying it does it on all three, I misread...that is weird, dude...I am having no issues and I have IE8, FF 3.5.7 and Chrome 3.0.195.38 open right now myself, on Windows XP.

ack, got this:

< begin belch >

FastCGI Error
The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request.

Error Details:

* The FastCGI process exceeded configured activity timeout
* Error Number: 258 (0x80070102).
* Error Description: The wait operation timed out.

HTTP Error 500 - Server Error.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

< end belch >

Then it loaded again after a F5. I'm not a fan of showing my OS when errors arise, but it may not be helped.

Anyway, I am trying on my laptop (older 1g, XP Firefox 3.5.6) and it's doing the same thing, popout nav below the home link, not under each tab location.

Goodle chrome does same thing. same version as main PC.

See attached for example:

I guess the mouse doesn't show, but the mouse pointer is hovering over the Why Us? link, making the 4 links pop out, but under the home link.

hahahaha, I shoulda looked thru the thread, I thought you were talking about HRC. hahaha

Yeah, something is choking in there. The menu problem is CSS positioning, FastCGI is something else...there is some slow running process going on there, a bad query or some inefficient code in there someplace slowing stuff down.

FastCGI sucks.

I see the code is on a template, so it may or may not be easy to go through and find the culprit. I don't know if you're CSS literate, Bleak, but maybe the webcentric site has a forums that has spelled out where to fix the problem.

Well, so much for going to their site. It's just the word: webcentric. ugh

Seems like a cool idea. I tried signing up as bace135, but am not receiving the registration email.... I don't think I entered a wrong email address, but I guess it's possible.

Yep, signed up here as well. You know, back when I was in college, one of my chief goals (I thought at the time) was to get into writing music for video games. That still is kind of a dream of mine in a way, but I just don't know that I'd be able to crank out the tracks fast enough, depending on the game. (I've always wanted to work on music for computer role-playing games, which usually involve a lot of tracks)

That said, I do have a close friend of mine who is a game developer at N-Space. He graduated out of Full Sail, and I was the music asset for one of their class projects. I managed to crank out about 4 or 5 simple tracks within a month or 2. Granted, I've gotten a lot better mixing since then, but also more careful, and things seem to take a little longer especially when I hit a dry spell.

Hey guys,

Sorry aobut the late response to everyone. Was away in Melbourne for a bit and then had a gazillion emails to contend with when i got back :)

ok .....

The Fast CGI thing is doing my head in. I suspect it is a result of a bucket load of eroneous code. Many Modules and componants have been added and removed in development and it has left the code in almighty mess. It might be best to scrap the site and start again.

The menu should be fixed. It's a problem with DIV properties and how the menu compnoant handles it's own placement.

I really appareciate everyoe having a look.

I'll be working hard over the next few weeks to get it running smoothly.

Thanks again to those that signed up and are getting the ball rolling.

Hah, the hostpc is just now putting on a sale for vps and ded hosting.

Here's a page, that'll fill you in on a bunch of details.

www.hostpc.com/community/showthread.php?t=4147

I know dB and HRC has been with them for quite a while. I have my own account with them too. The direct-admin is a peach to work with. I've worked in plesk, but like DA better (probably cause i've already learned it's workings).

anyway, there you go !
