Mastering a drum session

Hi, basically I have to master a drum session to the apparent broadcasting standard of -12 db. I have 9 tracks separating the drums but in my overhead right there's a section (about 3 seconds in total) where the db jumps from -12 to -9 and I've been trying to limit and compress the track with no results. The main problem is when I mixdown the drum session, it either all has to be at about -15 db with the one part going to -12db or I'd have to have the whole track at -12 with the section going to -9. This is very annoying!

I'm using Cubase 5.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

"Broadcast standard...?"

Believe me - The broadcast compressors will pummel your recording to death much easier than you will. And getting a drum (only?) recording to sit at -12dB(FS)RMS is going to be rather... I mean, it's all transients...

But there isn't a "broadcast standard" anyway for the most part. "Somewhere around line level" would be the best thing to shoot for (which is true of basically every single possible phase in the entire recording process).

In any case, I'd stay to the lower side (as again, the mauling units at the station will surely crush the hell out of the program material anyway - and at that point, you're going to really appreciate what little headroom you're leaving).

Seems like a volume automation would drop that section down.

That's what it's for.
