Behringer UB1204FX Pro mute problem

I just bought a used UB1204FX mixer and I have a strange problem. The mute button, when depressed, sends the signal to an alternate out, "3-4" rather than cut the signal. This toggle system should not be a problem. I have nothing plugged into the 3-4 outs and the 3-4 faders are pulled down. When on mute/3-4, however, sound comes out the mains anyway. The only way to have the mute work is to route my effects to 3-4. Then the mute cuts the sound, but my effects are lost.This sounds crazy, but I'm hoping that someone out there is familiar with this board and can explain how to have effects on a channel AND have it completely shut it off when I hit mute. The way it works now is crazy. There is nothing in the manual about it.
