Way to go with Logic Studio...?

I have a new 27" iMac, and am looking for the best way to go with a home project studio. I like the idea of the Logic studio program because it is designed for macs and offers simplicity (to a degree) as well as good aesthetics...
If studio is actually a decent program, I am wondering which way I should go as far as an interface...
The one thing I would really like is to be able to directly plug in instruments and mic, and be able to monitor the sound without latency, and still be able to hear some effects while playing... Is this possible, or is it a holy grail type situation? Can I do this effectively if Logic is my program?

Cheers, Mike

I think this might be right up your alley. And this would be the holy grail if indeed there was one. :-)

line6.com/podstudioux2/

Many of us here use Line 6 gear with good success. I've been using their gear since their very first product back around 1996 and haven't looked back since.

Although I have other high end audio interface's I find myself using this more often then not.

Haha do as Noize tells you. HRC recommended me to getting one of these, i foolishly was swayed away from it for an M-Audio product, and wound up returning it a week later.

As a stand alone interface the UX2 kicks butt. But just wait til you try the modeling ;]

Do you think the toneport ux8 is worth the extra money? Is it reliable gear? I can get one for $550 australian, with a months warranty. They are between 1k and 1200 over here?!

I've owned the UX8 since its release and still love it to this day. If you need to track drums and still want the Line6 guitar/bass/preamp modeling it's tough to beat imo.

Have used it on XP, Vista32 and Vista64. Have not tried Windows7 yet but that is more due to some of my plugins and programs vs. the actual hardware.

Also, something to consider is the UX8 already comes with pod farm platinum plug-in, which has like 36 more guitar heads. And 22 more bass heads and amps (ish, i'm going off of memory). Not to mention it has an expression pedal output, which the UX2 does not.

I've considered returning my UX2 and upgrading, but it'll save me a few bucks if i don't plus i don't feel like the hassle, and i'll never use 8 channels. Oh and i THINK the UX8 can have 2 amp modeled instruments playing at once if you're ever working with someone, certainly a bonus.

I'd say go for it. Chances are, after using this thing you'll want the extra amp models anyway. It sounds incredible.

One last tid bit, money wise (in US dollars). The UX2 is $200, the upgrade to Pod Farm Platinum is $250 (which more than doubles your amp selections, a few more effects, and can be used as a VST plug-in, allowing you to record "dry" and change the tone after recording, in the comfort of your computer chair :]). The UX8 is $500, though i've seen it new on ebay for $400 and a random website for $450.

So UX2, $450. UX8, $500 (or less if you play your cards right). Thats a lot of nice features for just 50 bucks.

heh, i include a quote by the BG himself, regarding forsight and planning:

640K ought to be enough for anybody.
Bill Gates

and another gem i couldn't pass up;

Windows 2000 already contains features such as the human discipline component, where the PC can send an electric shock through the keyboard if the human does something that does not please Windows.
Bill Gates

anyway, having 2 mics on an acoustic, 1 for onboard pickup, and 1 or 2 for room is not unheard of. 'specially if you have 2 peoples to record. they can add up quick.

The UX2 will let you have two models going at once as well. I did find that much easier to do via gearbox though (what was used before podfarm).

But yeah, my NT5's on my acoustic, the K2 in the hallway for a "room" mic and my Audix vocal mic. There is 4 tracks right there if going for that live feel.

Eh, I'm a one man operation here though :[ if i had a lot of gear, i might use more than 2, but for now 2 is plenty.

That being said if i hadn't already bought the UX2, i'd go get the UX8 for another 50 bucks in a heartbeat! I'm about to go lay down 250 on the model packs :] i'm actually super excited! Oddly enough, this feeling of about to unlock all this equipment almost feels like a video game haha. Its been forever since i used to play video games all day, but man this feeling takes me back. Woo-hoo!
