if i bounce my midi drum tracks down to audio and then import them back into my project, would i putting say, kick, snare, hats and toms in on mono tracks, and then o/h's ambience and a compressed mix track in on stereo tracks?

The tracks i have when im using them as just midi, are preset as stereo tracks, so is that going to be an issue when i import some in on mono's?

When i do the bouncing to audio, would they be bounced as stereo files?

depends on wat DAW ur using, but usually u can select to bounce as mono. I would recommend that single instruments like toms, snares, kick be mono because their easier to work with as their nature is a single source.

u can do stereo for ur mix track since obviously that is ur whole kit and ofcourse the cymbals, but thena gain u can also do mono cymbals left right, just gives u more options when mixing. I think ur best bet is do as much mono as possible since ur gonna be using them to mix again

dont know if u thought of this, but a sweet little thing to do instead of just having a stereo mix track along wiht ur single drums, is to pump ur drum mix through some speakers or PAs and record them back, gives u that room illusion

hey crux,
i have a room ambience mic which i left in stereo. is that what you mean, or you mean actually record the mix with a mic from speakers?

could be interesting.

i actually dint check whether i had an option when doing the bouncing for either stereo or mono. im using superior 2.0. i will have to check.

i also left the toms in stereo, the rolls seem to go from speaker to speaker that way, im not hearing that if i leave it in mono. it should still pan across the stereo filed though eh?
I wasnt hearing it.

if i dont have the option to bounce in mono, and did so, even though it was stereo, and then put it in on a mono track, do you think you'd notice it?

You can do it exactly as you stated and it will work just fine. A mono track is mixed in at whatever position it is panned to in the stereo field and will sound the same once its mixed down as it does when your mixing.

Did that make sense?

Yeah all good if ur bouncing to mono, the only reason i think mono is the way to go is coz even though u might like how the toms r workign now in stereo, when ur mixing with music u might still need the option to move them just slightly and if u have a stereo mix already of the toms and such, ur pretty much locked in in terms of minute panning changes, like if ur going from 50 to 60 or something. The mono bounces just give u more options in the long run

and yeah i did mean actually recording them from speakers not just using the ambience track the program gives u. This just allows u to get some different, unique, dimensions and a better sense of realism

argh, you just hit the nail for me there with the toms, i just been mixing the toms in stereo, and were finding they are disappearing in alot of rolls, but i wasnt hearing them properly in mono, and thats coz i hadnt panned them.

geez sometimes i just dont think about things ya know.
the simplest thing like forgetting to pan the toms when in mono just eludes me at times.

i guess sometimes there's so much going on you just get a brain freeze.

unfortunately, the way i record doesnt allow me to learn step by step methods used for normal recording.

im not really doing anything routine so it becomes a white wash sometimes.

anyway enough rambling. thanks for the help all.

all done now, they sound sweet.
just had kind of a break thru if ya like with ezdrummer.

ive tried almost everything to get that bloody kick drum and snare to sound good but have struggled with it till now.

What did i do? well, and im not sure why, but i put a multiband compressor in as an "insert" on snare and kick.

made a great difference. just thought id share.
