Being that there are so many submission on metal guitar wars that utilize impulses, can someone explain what they do and what they are?

Sep 30, 2009 10:07 pm Impulse files are created by special reverb software that captures the reverberation characteristics of a specific acoustical space or a specific cabinet/speaker. Then you can load this impulse file into a compatible reverb plugin to recreate the reverberation characteristics that were captured originally.
So for example you can capture the characteristics of a certain 4x12 cabinet's sound and use that impulse file on a direct recorded track to create the impression that it was played through that 4x12 cabinet.
Or you can create an impulse of your rehearsal space and apply it to a direct recorded track to give it the impression that it was recorded in that room.
It's kind of cool and has lots of potential, although I haven't fooled with it for more than a few minutes myself.
Here's a more technical explanation:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convolution_reverb
Looking at KVRAudio.com for some example plugins and I found this one:
www.kvraudio.com/get/3533.html
Not only does it use impulse files, but it does its computation on your NVidia GPU instead of your CPU. Neat!

Oct 01, 2009 10:29 am Ugh, migraines suck. I'm one of the lucky ones that's never had the pleasure. But my wife has had more than her share. My sister used to get such bad migraines, she had syringes of medication on hand so she could jab herself since she was too nauseous to keep oral meds down. Yuck. No bright lights, no loud sounds, no movement, no nothing. Terrible.
Now, let's put a little mic in one of your ears, a little speaker in the other, send the sound of an electric spark through the speaker, record it in the mic, send it through a convolution algorithm, and then we can all recreate the feeling of the migraine in your head in our reverb VSTs. It'll be the next big thing!
Oops, didn't mean to use an exclamation mark...I'll be quiet.
Shhhh (hhh...hhh...hhh) <--that's the reverb, you see

Oct 01, 2009 10:39 am well, if you can create a miagrane sim, then can you work on a "get rid of one" sim?

Oct 01, 2009 11:34 am Helz yeah, I'll just do the same thing, only with reverse reverb!

Oct 01, 2009 09:12 pm Indeed, there are tons of impulse responses on the web. If you are looking for cabinet specific ones though there are a couple of guitar forums that have some listed.
But Tadpui got it spot on as to what and how they are and work.
