can a mixers direct out be used to record into a multitrack recorder?

Welcome to HRC...

The quick answer is yes, but it really depends on the mixer. If you have a powered mixer you could do some damage by sending the direct outs (the masters, anyway) to your multitrack. But if it isn't a powered mixer, then I think you should be fine. That's the way my setup works too.

What make and model of gear are we talking about?

Yeah, what Jim said, if it's real direct outs on each channel, then that's kinda what they're for. This way you get signal that doesn't have to go through the whole mixer chain, just tap signal out right after the preamp (and probably the channel insert).

Sorry to hijack slighlty (it is related)

Are you refering to the "main outs"?
I've been reading that it is better to use the "alt" bus if you have one. Is this not true.?

I'd like to know as I currently use the main outs myself and re-route the effects send and return from the multitrack, back through the alt bus to use the mixers onboard effects when mastering on the multitrack. (see profile for gear)
