Decided to rework CoP from the ground up:

Well, after x-amount of time, I decided I wasn't satisfied with the feel of Children of Pripyat, and the lyrics. So, I've decided to completely rework the song from the ground up. I've gotten about 30% or so done so far, and I just uploaded the snippet. (edit: er, uploaded here on HRC in my profile)

I'm still using the vocals from the previous incarnation, but I do intend to retrack those as well to better convey the feeling in the lyrics.

In this new work, I'm aiming for a harsher, more gritty sound to fit with the music, which is a bit darker than the previous idea as well. I really like how it's starting to come together. Got a ways to go yet, but I feel like this better exemplifies the idea as a whole. I also feel like they lyrics are conveyed better.

For the guitars and bass, I'm using the Big and Dig amp models/sims from AcmeBarGig. They're a little processor intense, but I really like how configurable they are, and I'm getting some pretty good sounds despite the fact that the guitar is a (pretty decent) soundfont of a clean electric. And I'm running that through a chorus effect, to try to create a nice full sound.

I'm really liking how this is turning out so far. Hurray inspiration!

I think you're headed in the right direction for you're goals for the song.

You did kind of take it in a different direction indeed. I liked the harmonies again as well. I think the way you are doing them is very fitting in that song. Can't wait to see were you end up with this. Good start though you have going.

Okay, updated the snippet, and it's in my profile. I enabled the download in case wimpy has problems playing it, since the mp3 is at 256kbps. Better safe than sorry I think.

Anyhoo, I played around with the guitar sounds a lot, and I'm finally satisfied with the overall sound now. I'm really digging the VSTs from AcmeBarGig, and I think I'm getting some decent sounds considering it's a clean guitar sf2 being run through a simulated cabinet and head.

The bass is 4fron'ts free Bass Module. I'm running that through AcmeBarGig's "BIG" wheras I'm running the guitars through the SoloC Full stack.

I retracked my vocals with my trusty Audio Technica MB3k dynamic mic, and I'm running it through some light reverb and chorus effects with some light compression. Course, I used some automation for the chorus. Speaking of the chorus, the vocals are probably a little too forward since I layered them for a thicker sound. At least it seems that way to me atm. It could just be my ears though after messing with this for x number of hours today lol.

I haven't recorded the part yet, but the synth lead is good ol' oatmeal. Still one of my fav synths. It's a little different sound than the original CoP, but it still cuts through he mix pretty well. I'm hoping to get some ideas down while my girly is outta town.

I also need to come up with ideas for the improv area between the 3rd and 4th verse (which I haven't done yet) and retrack the 4th verse. The snippet should end a little after the 3rd verse, right before the improv comes in, so roughly 3:00min long.

Really starting to like how this is turning out though.

Yep, it is different for sure. The synth will add a good deal to it, as it sounds very different without the synth. I do like the new guitar sounds though for sure, a bit more bite and punch with them. After you add the synth parts you may end up needing to bring the bass up a bit in the mix though as it is there, but a little lite. Vocals were cool in the last one but these are working as well.

I'll wait to hear an update as well.
