Close any other application that uses your sound card. ASIO only allows a single device to use its drivers at a time.

thanks sir,i have tried that but there never anything else running anyway,it was working fine one night i got up next day and the message ASIO driver ASIO multimedia driver could not be loaded!
im running with vista and have also tried to run in compatibility with all other operating systems and still no joy!
i did read that there are not so many soundcards that are compatible with ASIO drivers!and that it best to get an ASIO based sound card!
my laptop is only a packard bell mid range spec but my mate is using sony vaio and he got the same problem a few days after me!
i dont mind havin to change sound card its just doin my head in not bein able to use it hehe

Well, your soundcard probably has no ASIO drivers so it makes sense it could not be loaded (unless you installed ASIO4ALL). If using the internal soundcard on your laptop you need either asio4all or to tell cubase to use your onboard audio.

Did you perform any updates to Cubase that might have reset your hardware config?

Anyways, if you have the money and love making music then you owe yourself a dedicated interface :)

A dedicated interface (fancy soundcard) is just that. They usually hook to your PC via USB2 or Firewire and offer much higher quality for capturing audio. You can get one with two channels or 16 if you like depending on how much $$$ you wanna spend.

The deal with ASIO supported devices is that you can capture multiple signals at once. My interface (line 6 UX8) allows me to capture 8 tracks all at once to 8 seperate files which gives me the ability to edit each independently.

ASIO4ALL is not my strong point, I get it but don't use it so can offer no specifics. I am pretty sure the name implies that it works with just about everything and does not need an ASIO compliant device. It allows folks with soundblasters and intergrated sound cards to use ASIO in their DAW.

Now if you seriously would like to move ahead and purchase an interface, let us know how much you camn\want to spend, many channels you would need and what type of instruments you would be using. We can provide you with a good list of affordable options once we know what your desires are. There are many decent interfaces ranging from $150 to $500 (and beyond).

ASIO4ALL is an ASIO emulation. I do believe it needs a WDM driver present for it to work. And windows and most on board sound chips do not use a WDM driver. They use the native windows generic driver or an emulator as well which is MME and not worth crap for recording but it will work. Just not very well.
