Some warming options im considering...

Hey guys, im wrapping up some mixes and going down the dredded "home mastering" route. Im actually really happy with my results thus far and in the end, i couldnt afford pro mastering if i wanted.

Long story short i want to bring in warmth to my recordings, ive been using Magneto and liking it alot but i just want to weigh out my options before finalizing. A long time ago i recorded stuff by using a laptop to line in my instruments and then lining out of my Line 6 KB37 into a soundcard using all the Gearbox stuff, i felt it was "warmer" despite not actually having any of the components ppl associate with that concept. any pitfalls if i were to route my whole song this way? basically feeding the song through my KB37 into another computer? i suspect a loss of quality due to all the conversion as well as non-optimum wiring.. ideas?

another idea i have is that my friend owns a dBX 166XL compressor, will using this as one of my final compressors apart from giving compression also add warmth?

for all intents and purposes when im saying warmth im thinking of the slightly saturated sound that softens and livens a track as well as imparts a kind of shine.

all comments on my "guerilla tactics" r welcome

Some folks just run their music out of the PC, through a nice tube preamp and back into the PC...or, there is also a plug called "Vintage Warmer" that provides a lot more options than Magneto...I like Magneto myself, though.

Yeah, i dont have a tube pre, that was definitely something i wanted to do, but its just not an option, i dont even know anyone who owns one here...

i also dont have the cash at the moment to invest in more plugs. so basically im in a zero cash required solution situation...

would be insane to use the tube pre section of my amp head? even if its just for the high end shine and soft compression of tubes... would it possible to run it through a head and just mix it back in?

How about running it thru any analog device you have just for giggles...see what happens. Any preamp, amp head, stereo reciever, whatever...might prove interesting.

Will do, all i have now is time (actually i barely have that now either), but yeah ill run it through everything i got.

BTW i also have a friend with those old 8 track Tascam tape recorders, i heard they were the top of the line for home studios back in the day... could recording my song on to tape and driving the gain as i feed it back do the trick?

how about mixing out of the box? is it possible for you to run individual tracks (or "stems" aka sub mixes ie:drums) into individual inputs on an analog mixer, then re-record them back into the computer....theory is you're using electricity and physics instead of math to do the 'mixing' or 'summing'. seems quite a popular tactic, i've never done it.

I hope you're planning on posting the end result, Crux. I like your band. Let me know how you like the DBX 166xl if you use it, I'm kind of interested in getting one...

I will be posting for sure, coz these trax will comprise our album which were gonna just gonna hand out for free (PLUG!)

but yeah, ill post the different tests we run gonna do

through the gearbox as outboard
through teh dbx
maybe through an amp head but i really doubt it....
through tape (any suggestions on how to make sure im making the most of this one? i think this is teh real ticket and i will putting some effort into it... is it just simply record to tape and record back?)

I dont know much (or anything) about tape, but my band has a Tascam MK4II i believe its called, 4 track with a tape section. Never used it, one of those dug up from relative type deals.

hmmm the problem with the cassette recorders is their signal to noize ratio is pretty bad, lots of hissssss...the best way to use it (imo) IF ya wanna use it at all, is use the noise reduction (if it's go it) and also just roll of the highs on the whole thing anyway and record yer final mix with the highs cut (on the tape machine not the computer)....then re-record the playback back into the computer, and BLEND the tape signal with the original use the digital for 'clarity' and the tape for 'warmth' although it might be best just to not use the tape at all...you'll have to see...spray that machine out with some contact cleaner and some compressed air.....a clean tape deck, is a happy one! lol

good luck bro

Ya know what, dude, I'd LOVE it if you documented your tests and findings, maybe make an article about it for the site. Could be a great article.

Will do, ill get some photos and things and write out some notes, but all the tests might take a month or so since i dont have all the equipment in one place.

That will mean i might go with a final product long before i do all the testing, but ill do them anyway IT PAYS TO KNOW haha
